Would you take in a neighbour's parcel left on a doorstep?

If you saw a parcel left on the doorstep of a neighbour, would you take it in?

We live on a VERY busy road. Lots of vehicles passing, lots of footfall.

No. I might right their doorbell or knock their door in the hope they'd notice it but wouldn't really wait or check to see if they took it in. But only if I was walking right past their front door for another reason.

Dartmoorcheffy · 07/08/2026 19:00

I have done. My ndn had a parcel delivered, and it was left on his doorstep in the pouring rain, so I took it in and dropped it round when he got home. He was very grateful.

Ponderingwindow · 07/08/2026 19:02

Yes. Only if it looked like they were out of town, because the norm is parcels left outside in our area. However, if they haven’t collected by the end of the day, neighbors will help one another and keep things safe from weather and animals.

One side, yes, and message. The other, no chance.

Snap.

Kimmers4334 · 07/08/2026 19:04

No I wouldn’t because my neighbours don’t come round for days when I accept anything for them. I’d also rather they just leave my parcels on the doorstep in case it’s something urgent and they’re going out. I live on a busy road and never had anything stolen but I might have a different view if I lived somewhere else

squashyhat · 07/08/2026 19:06

Yes. In my small row of 9 houses we would always help each other out. However the infuriating thing is that not all of them will agree to a WhatsApp group so it's not easy to let them know I have it.

MummySleepDeprived · 07/08/2026 19:06

All my neighbours now yes- the previous one no because I don't want to risk it being drugs. That was a fun time...

I've taken it in and left a note 😊

If you wouldn't, I'm curious why?

Because I don’t talk to my neighbour and they aren’t very nice

PassMeTheCookies · 07/08/2026 21:35

Yes. I do this regularly. And they do the same for me.

ShetlandishMum · 07/08/2026 21:36

Depending on which neighbour it was.

mondaytosunday · 07/08/2026 21:43

No, unless I knew them and had their number and thought they’d be away (ad my neighbour often is). My neighbour has done this for me. I’ve never had anything stolen off my door step but maybe she has.

user293948849167 · 07/08/2026 21:46

No. I would be pissed off if my neighbour did this too

YouSawBrigadoon · 07/08/2026 21:46

Only our neighbours on one side, with whom we are friendly enough to do this. And only if I knew they were away. On the other side, the house is set way back from the road, so I’d not even see a parcel.

Friendlygingercat · 07/08/2026 21:55

I once knocked at a neighbours because she had left the keys in her front door! She gave me an odd look as though I had done something wrong by warning her that anyone could have walked in, or stolen them.

I don't have neighbour phone numbers or give out mine. I don't participate in neighbourhood whatsapps or anything like that.

I once had two parcels for another person left at the end of my drive by Evri. I am mobility impaired and had no way of taking them around - they were for a house on the other end of the estate. My nephew went out of his way to deliver them on his next visit and the women was rude to him for not bringing them sooner. Even when he explained they were misdelivered to his disabled aunt she did not apologise or look sorry. He told her "next time my aunt gets a parcel for someone else |Ill tell her to put it in the bin because I wont be delivering it."

Fortunately we have not got any more random parcels.

ClaredeBear · 07/08/2026 22:02

Yes, often and they do it for me.

DilemmaDelilah · 08/08/2026 10:14

I live down a short driveway that is shared with 2 neighbours. We all get on well, in a having a conversation when we meet but not going into each other's houses kind of way, and I would definitely message them to ask. Mind you, they would probably message me to ask me to do it.

I also have a reciprocal arrangement with one of them that we keep an eye on each other's house/water the garden/take in parcels if we are going to be away.

supercrone · 08/08/2026 10:20

I have done this

supercrone · 08/08/2026 10:21

supercrone · 08/08/2026 10:20

I have done this

They were grateful

notacooldad · 08/08/2026 10:24

I have but I stuck a note on the front door. They would have known it was me as they have Ring.
I dont think we've been too bad for porch pirates where we live though.

orangehandles · 08/08/2026 10:29

Windy day here a couple of days ago and DH went for a walk. About 100 yards up the road he picked up what he thought was a plastic bag and was going to put it in the bin. Then he realised it was actually a light and flimsy package that had been left outside our neighbour's house and it had got blown down the street.

They were very pleased to get it back.

Clydebuilt · 08/08/2026 10:42

Yes…but I’m blessed with fabulous neighbours!

reluctantbrit · 08/08/2026 10:57

Yes for the ones directly next to each other. Did it and just send a text that I have it.

If I am not in when they are scheduled to be back I would store it somewhere out of sight but accessible and let them know.

Our front doors are visible from the road and especially the Amazon driver just dump everything in plain view.

sesquipedalian · 08/08/2026 11:02

If next door are out, the delivery person would usually ask if I would mind taking a parcel for them anyway - which I do. It’s a small service for a neighbour, and then I don’t feel bad on the rare occasions when they take a parcel for me.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 08/08/2026 14:32

One side, yes - I don’t like them, but I don’t dislike them enough to not take in a parcel. Plus, they collect it.

Other side - fuck off. Do I look like a parcel storage site? If you leave your parcel in my hallway for three weeks despite the company putting a note through your door (I watched them do this) and being verbally told three times and spending the three weeks walking to and from your car ie not sick, not disabled, not away, then I won’t do it again. They get a lot of parcels, no idea who they use for storage now.

CurlewKate · 08/08/2026 14:38

Yes. But I a not a typical mumsnetter in many ways!
