Can I do all this in a day. On my own?

Can i get all this done in one day on my own in one day. It would be around 12 hours. I have around 8 10kg washes could be more.

I need to build a couple of flat packs and dds bed. Plus i need to move all of dds stuff from ds room back into dds room. Irs alot.

Then I need to do ds bedroom. Its trashed. I'm hoping its not as bad as it looks .

There will likely end up more washing than I think.

Then I also need a general tidy up of the house.

I'm thinking maybe i should start with the worst room.

Children are not here. I want to make a clean slate so they can start from fresh. And i will do things like stickers for where things go. Maybe an alarm set at say 6pm every day means time to tidy.

I'd wash all the clothes today (sort them into lights/darks/colours), but leave all the other laundry for another day.

Then prioritise making each room broadly clean and tidy. Done is better than perfect.

You could maybe get one flat pack done too. Leave the others for another day.

Shinckle · 06/08/2026 13:10

The washing is easier to do piecemeal than the bedrooms, so it's not the priority on the one day you get their rooms to yourself.

Stick a wash on. Spend 15 mins on a timer clearing rubbish from DS floor and gathering anything that belongs in another room into a basket, then relocate those items elsewhere. Then spend half an hour or so on a timer, making inroads into the remainder.

Have a breather, drink something, not necessarily vodka.

Then tackle DD's bed. This is a big job and will use lots of energy.

The other flat packs and washing can be done in slower time if necessary. Pace yourself, don't burn out. Making a good dent in it is enough.

If you don't get the storage furniture assembled quite yet, consider using bin bags to store the stuff that's going to go into them so you can see the wood for the trees.

My wash finishes in 8 mins so I'm just waiting for that. Hang that then I'm going to do ds room. I think his room is more important. Because it can't be used at the moment. It can but its not nice to be in there.

All that would take me about three days @Wishywashy88 but I'm 70 now, so not as spry as I used to be.

Don't knock yourself out trying to do it all in one day. You won't get the washing dry anyway.

Yes I'm going to do similar. I have put a 30 min was on and I'm going to do what I can in 30 mins in ds room

Washing is easy, it's the drying that's the problem. If you put it all in a cupboard it can't air and you could cause damp problems. Do one load of washing and let it dry before you start the next one. It won't take long to catch up. Also, once it's dry, put it away immediately or it will all pile up again.

Can you get a friend to help? Share the stress.

I have been doing it for 4 years . Had no problems with damp leave door slightly open

Do 2 loads of washing and putting away every single day until you get it back down to a manageable level.

If you do it all at once you’ll have an overwhelming mountain of clean stuff that won’t get put away.

aintnothinbutagstring · 06/08/2026 13:35

You're putting a lot of pressure on yourself to do all of that in one day. I would prioritise what needs to be washed - underwear, pyjamas, things that can be worn now - tshirts/shorts. Save jumpers/hoodies/jeans/one off wears for later. Do the flat pack stuff - that always takes longer than you think and you want to focus on doing it properly. Can your children help with tidying their rooms (bribe with pocket money if needed).

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 06/08/2026 13:37

When i have multiple loads of washing i put it straight onto coat hangers to dry. It reduces the need to iron and means i can get more on a washing line/rail/airer. It can also be hung up in wardrobe without the need to fold. Ultimately it does not really matter whether you can achieve all you set out in the time frame. Making a good start and seeing a difference will hopefully motivate you to carry on. Write a list in priority order and tick everything off as you go along as a visual reminder of what you are achieving. Good luck.

sparrowhawkhere · 06/08/2026 13:42

Good luck. You sound really overwhelmed I get like this. I just repeat ‘keep on, keeping on’ I read it on here once and it sounds American but works for me!

MagpiePi · 06/08/2026 13:50

Everyone else seems to be focusing on the washing, but I'm a bit more interested in the furniture that needs building. When you say 'a couple of flat packs', what exactly do you mean? Small bookcase units, bedside tables, chests of drawers, wardrobes?
Even something seemingly straightforward like a bed can take at least a couple of hours depending on whether you have to screw all the slats in individually and how familiar you are with putting flat pack furniture together.

LoudPlumDog · 06/08/2026 14:23

You were the poster that used to post before and after pictures of the rooms? You have been here before and got through it all. You can do it again.

Shinckle · 06/08/2026 14:33

You've got this. It doesn't need to be perfect.

I'd use full wash cycles. The drying is the limiter anyway so might as well get things fully clean.

But mainly I hope the bedrooms are moving forward and DD loves her new bed x

Mum2Fergus · 06/08/2026 14:38

Why does it have to be done in one day?

Wishywashy88 · 06/08/2026 14:40

Ds room was easier than i thought. Its not great but its much better than it was. And i can lower the prority of that. If i can do more great if not its not the end of the world. Ended up with more washing though.

The flat packs are not prority i would rather get them done. But i think they will likely be last.

I would much rather get the things that feel dirty first.

Regarding washing i don't have time for sorting. Colours types etc its much easier just to stuff it in the machine.

Why does it have to be done in one day?

Reality is it doesn't. But i just feel a bit hyper so thought i would use it. And give myself a challenge. And i would feel better about

What are you doing to look after / be good to yourself? That is missing from your list? Good coffee? Music? Tasty lunch? 10 min walk?

Saltysweetspicy · 06/08/2026 14:57

I think aim high and go for it but don't beat yourself up if you can't get it all done! Will all that washing hang up on 4 airers though?

thinking the same, shithole99 or something like that

Saltysweetspicy · 06/08/2026 15:20

How are you getting on so far?

fishfingergermanbight · 06/08/2026 15:26

Re your laundry situation. There are plenty of laundry services which collect and deliver back. A quick Google will find those which operate in your area. Then you can get on with the rooms.
