How painful is ear piercing with a needle?

I want to get a 2nd ear piercing, this time with a needle.
When I had my 1st ones done 21yrs ago I had them done in a jewellers shop with a gun and it really really hurt and took ages to heal.
I want it to be a better experience this time.

DD got hers done with a needle in a tattoo parlour unbeknownst to me and says it didn’t hurt.

It’s like a very quick pinch then it’s gone, it’s not very painful at all and it’s really quick.

I haven't had my ears pierced with a needle, BUT when I was 18 I had my nose pierced with a gun (yes, I know that was a bad idea NOW) and it felt like I'd been punched. About two decades later it'd healed over and I had it redone with a needle and it stung a tiny bit for the time it was being done and then it was absolutely fine.

I did my own with a needle. It bloody hurt loads.

i know afew people who’ve taken their kids to piercing/tattoo places and have favoured the needle method over a gun. Apparently less trauma to the ear drum and they heal much quicker.

I've had both (helix) and the needle is absolutely no more painful than the gun.

Not very painful, but slightly more painful than a gun. However, I didn’t find the gun at all painful, so your threshold for pain might be different.

I had my 1st and 2nd lobe piercings done by gun in the 80s but I had the needle with my 3rd lobes.
It was fine and felt less pinched than having a gun. They healed much better too.
I also have a few ear cartilage piercings and a pierced nose, all done by needle and they've been stingy, some a bit "crunchy" (for want of a better word!) but all bearable. My daith piercing bled a lot at the time but hurt the least to have done.

In the lobe? Not painful at all. I have 5 lobe piercings done with needles and it's so quick and smooth with a nice sharp needle compared to blunt earrings being pushed through at force with a gun.

I didn't even feel it.

Barely felt it. I did a breath in and as I blew the breath out she pierced it
if you do the breathing it helps, I had 2 lip piercings done like that which were like a small pinch

My DD had hers with needle and no pain.

You were likely too slow doing it yourself.

I had it done in Maria Tash and it was nothing, just a quick pinching sensation. I wish that had been available when I had my ears pierced with a gun in a cheap high street jewellers at 15. That led to nothing but trouble and pain until I let them heal over in my later teens and I still have the nickel allergy.

It didn’t hurt at all. I had absolutely no pain or swelling or anything afterwards - it has healed so well. I also had mine done many years ago with a gun and it didn’t heal as well then.

I've had both a gun and a needle. The gun one hurt way more and took a lot longer to heal.

The needle I barely felt happen, and it slowly got more painful over the next hour. I took a couple of paracetamol and it went away and never really came back. Never went over a 3/10 at any point. I just had to keep the ring clean and it healed in about 3 weeks.

The gun was just an instant 7/10 pain that dropped down to a 5/10 after a couple of hours, but stayed there for a good 3 days with a further week of aching. It took 2 months to heal and stayed tender the entire time.

The gun was a lobe, and the needle the top of my ear in a place where it's supposed to hurt more, but it felt so much easier.

Not as painful as an injection, imo. (No liquid being forced into skin or muscle.) Ears don’t hurt much and certainly not for very long.

I've had nine needle piercings (so far!) and in all honesty none of them have really hurt. A very brief pain, literally no more than a few seconds. The only that stung was my first lobe piercing, and that was only a mild stinging for about twenty minutes after I had it done; my second and third lobe piercings were easy as pie! I've never been pierced with a gun, but they look brutal in comparison.

From what I've seen and heard, professional piercers are generally very understanding of whatever worries you might have. It's worth going into whichever studio you're considering and asking them any questions that are playing on your mind.

significantly less painful than a gun. gun is blunt force truma and should be banned.

I had ear lobe piercing done at a professional piercer’s, using a hollow needle so it creates a punch through the skin. The lobe was held in a triangular clamp so the skin was taut and then pierced with the needle and the earring placed in. I was expecting pain but surprised by how gentle and effortless it was. Healed very nicely and with no issues.

I had my ears pierced with a needle years ago (by a Dr too😁) - I don’t recall it hurting so much for the actual piercings but then the sleeper earrings needed to be manually put into place - & thats when it did start hurting.
As an aside I was just 16 & it was meant to be one of my first big decisions (it was years ago haha) but the piercing bled lots too & it looked horrific
