Just for fun. These are 5 phrases that a lot of us probably grew up hearing in the 80s/90s. There’s a trend online to ask your child to finish the sentences.

  1. Ill give you something
  2. I broughtyou into this world
  3. Just wait until
  4. As long as you live under my roof
  5. children should be seen

I I asked my 11 year old and his responses were

  1. its my favourite
  2. and I can’t take you out
  3. i finish work
  4. youll always be my child
  5. and loved and cared for

I’ve just asked my 13 year old DS.

Ill give you something
I brought you into this world
Just wait until
As long as you live under my roof
Children should be seen

His responses were
… ohhh what have you got for me
… and I can take you out - except you didn’t, so you can’t (he’s adopted)
… Payday
… you’ll clean your bedroom
… in school

Not sure what that says about my parenting other than I’ve never used those phrases which were a well worn anthem in my house growing up.

@Loveheart1313 answers 4 and 5 are just adorable.
@Jellycatspyjamas answers 1 and 3 made me laugh.
( I don't have my granddaughter til Saturday - I'll do it with her then).

Love this! My kids said:
I'll give you something
13 Yr old "anything?"
10 yr old "a hug"
4 Yr old "I want to play"

I brought you into this world
13 Yr old "ok"
10 yr old "I can take you out"
4 yr old "eh?"

Just wait until
13 yr old "I get home"
10 yr old "I tell your father, but dad is soft!"
4 yr old "a car goes past"

As long as you live under my roof
13 Yr old "it's my rules"
10 yr old "you'll follow my rules"
4 yr old "don't slam the door"

Children should be seen
13 Yr old "and heard"
10 yr old "and heard"
4 yr old "and make sure they're safe"

@Blackeyelinerbigeyes so funny 🤣
Interesting that your 10 year old is on the money 🤣. The 13 year old seems blasé and your 4 year old answers.....so sweet ❤️

Loveheart1313 · 06/08/2026 09:15

I saw it on my feed and I just thought it was really sweet.

A lot of children won’t have heard the original phrases/meanings so I think it’s really funny to hear what they come out with.

Not at all a criticism of previous generations or to say my parenting is perfect (it’s not), it’s just quite funny and interesting.

My DS thought the idea of “wait til your father gets home” as a threat was really funny. They have a great relationship and he’d never be scared of his dad. He did say “but you’re more strict than dad, what would he do that you didn’t do already”.
