Are there any online shops that sell outdoor plants already in pots?

I’m looking to buy my brother a plant for his birthday. It’s literally the only thing I can think he needs/ would want.
He lives in a flat with a balcony, has no gardening stuff like a trowel or compost so want to buy an outdoor plant already in a pot. Does anywhere sell something like this online? I see lots of plants but not any already in pots.

Not really, they get too shaken about during transport.

Amazon sells loads of outdoor plants in pots.... but I think what you mean is a plant in an attractive, larger, pot. I would suggest you buy him a plant and a separate pot. He will probably need a small bag of compost as well.

ImNotReallyHere · 05/08/2026 17:15

Thanks. Yes I’ve been searching for a plant already potted in a terracotta or similar pot. I suspect if I order one and a pot and compost, he won’t get round to potting it himself and as he lives at the other end of the country, I need to order online.

Are there any garden centres local to him?

Buscobel · 05/08/2026 17:18

You can buy garden vouchers online. Would that be a possibility?

minipie · 05/08/2026 17:28

Hmm there are places like Patch plants and Hortology who do this for indoor plants - you choose the plant and they suggest a pot the right size and you buy both together. Or you can choose the pot first and they suggest plants.

It’s not pre potted exactly, they deliver the plant in a plastic pot that will fit inside the nice pot. So can either take it out of the plastic and repot or just pop the plastic one inside.

I am not sure if they do the same for outdoor but worth a look?

ImNotReallyHere · 05/08/2026 17:29

He lives in central London, no car and unlikely to ever get round to going to a garden centre if I sent vouchers. I’m not sure if there is one near him but will google

David Austen Rose? They come in pots and are very pretty. Will work on a balcony- just don’t get a climber.

Chairoverthere · 05/08/2026 17:30

M&S has roses for example, other items look like indoor plants www.marksandspencer.com/l/gifts/plants

Buscobel · 05/08/2026 17:33

David Austin roses are lovely!

Have bought lots of plants from Amazon in pots -all arrived in excellent condition

TheFairyCaravan · 05/08/2026 17:40

Yes there are.

Plants4Presents are excellent. I use them every year when it’s my dad’s birthday.

Roots are good. DS2 bought me a Magnolia tree from there for my birthday

I’ve bought plants from the RHS online shop and they come in pots.

Plants for presents looks good. It say it come in a recyclable pot. Is that a pot that looks nice on a balcony or one that you need to repot?

Have a google for a local garden centre near him, our local one delivers so this could be an option. Nice gift idea

The plants I’ve bought have always come in a plastic pot then you have the option to choose a more decorative pot to put it in on a drop down, usually at no extra cost, before you check out.

Sarah Raven does gift sacks of bulbs, and always has lovely containers for them. I ordered a bulb lasagne for my daughter who lives abroad (not from SR because I knew she was happy to put it together herself), plus a block of coir compost which you rehydrate so it swells up like magic. Avoids the need for a giant bagfull when you only have a patio.

@ImNotReallyHere Crocus have a section in their gifting tab where you can buy a plant and pot. Pricey but it's an option.
Another place is Sprouts of Bristol where they give pot and soil options with the plants.

When we bought an established acer in a pot as a memorial plant for a friend who had been widowed we contacted a local garden centre, explained and it was delivered in the pot.

BarbarianBabs · 06/08/2026 20:31

Not read the thread so apologies if this has been suggested but Patchplants.com

after you add the plant to basket you can then choose a pot to add or not if you don’t need one.

they have potted olive trees which are lovely

hoarahloux · 06/08/2026 20:54

Patch Plants are kind of pricey but do nice plants in nice pots - good customer service too. I was happy with the plants I got from them recently.
