Not content with fucking up the world, Elon Musk is responsible for something of a car crash on the Moon. It sounds so much like the opening scene of a film (especially The Thing) that I thought it might be fun to imagine what kind of Thing might emerge, and whether it might be even worse than the Things for which he is responsible on Earth.

SpaceX rocket about to crash into the moon in unintentional collision

Piece of SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket weighing four tonnes will hit the lunar surface on Wednesday at 5,400 miles per hour

Perhaps the film could be a mash-up of The Thing and Wallace & Gromit's Grand Day Out, with poor Wallace reimagined as Musk, and some sort of cheese-based monster causing havoc.

Well, not a surprise. He manages to crash everything.
But I am not buying on any unintentionality from him. I kind of need proof that it was not a calculated matter.
The crater, will it be called Trump-Musk crater?

KamikazePigeon · 05/08/2026 07:57

The crater awakens an ancient evil. It slides slowly out, newly conscious for the first time in eons. It blinks and looks around it. Only one thought is slowly forming: revenge.

MushMonster · 05/08/2026 07:58

We would have to load this piece of rocket with crackers. For Wallace and Grommit, who found themselves all the way up there withour crackers! Silly sausages!
What should we load with the crackers? And how to launch it? And more importantly, which crackers do we send?

ChuisEpuisee · 05/08/2026 08:00

...that awakens a race of taxi drivers, who come to earth and, finding that so many taxis in America are driverless, revolt and imprison their creator. Driverless cars are seized and recycled, and new, greener cars (science TBD) are produced en masse via their alienish ways. We all go back, even the Americans, to just having taxi drivers and "Been busy?" becomes the new US national motto.

Needs a bit of work, I admit.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 05/08/2026 08:01

I’m thinking like the Morlock, but they have similar intelligence to us (well some of us!) and now we have the crater, they can launch from the depths of the moon and come for us…

Do we think we could send a file with some targets for that revenge? Just the pic, name and address of some Earth individuals for this Thing to unleash its wrath on?
We could catapult a box of crackers and the file into the rocket fragment ahead of the crash. Two birds with one proyectile sort of thing.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 05/08/2026 08:02

Either that or the crash will fuck with the gravitational pull of the moon so tidal waves and one half of the world will never see the sun again?…

MyThreeWords · 05/08/2026 08:02

Looking on the bright side, it could be the Clangers. They just tut lovingly at the mess we have made of everything and bring us some nourishing soup.

OP posts:
MushMonster · 05/08/2026 08:07

No, no soup. It has to be scary. For Musk, that is. A form changing alien, like the Thing or the black slime from Spiderman is good.
But.... what about the crackers? Let's not forget the crackers! They have to get there unbroken, by the way.

MushMonster · 05/08/2026 08:13

How is this Thingy or Thingies getting to Earth? Or are they going to exert revenge remotely, with some super control powers? Or time/ space travel?

Persephonia1966 · 05/08/2026 08:22

The resulting debris from the moon reaches the earths lower orbit and crashes into some more space X satellites which break up into multiple pieces of debris which themselves crash into some other satellites. This triggers a slow moving chain reaction as the entire orbit system of earth is slowly destroyed. GPS stops working as do satellite phones and other communication, satellite internet, government spy satellites etc etc. Many die as a result of this (emergency services reliant on GPS to find people in remote locations cants find them etc). Musk titters and says that the number of deaths are zero.

Quite soon there is so much debris in the earths orbit that launching new satellites is pointless, and any exploration beyond the vast ring of colliding shrapnel now impossible until such time as the debris has fallen out of orbit which might take decades or might take centuries. Elon Musk smirks and says the amount of debris is 0. We are trapped on earth with them.

As the pieces of debris start to fall to earth the vast majority of it burns up and "meteors" burning through the sky become a common sight. Some don't burn up completely and land in built up areas killing more people and destroying property. Unfortunately Elon Musk is not one of the casualties.

Ok, so perhaps the crash makes The Clangers Go Evil (in fact that could be the film title). They are so traumatised by the devastation wrought by Musk that all of their loving energy goes to the dark side. Their lovely cooing hoots mutate into distonal squawks and they repurpose the crashed rocket to take them to the Earth, where they serve out 'soup' that has the same properties as the Alien's blood in Alien - ie an acidity that burns right through us, our homes and our driverless taxis.

@Persephonia1966 That is a very realistic take. We could have some attempts to clean Earth orbit thrown in, a bit like Gravity?

I quite like the Clangers mutating into Darth Vaders LOL
Not sure about the acid for us all. I am hoping for a targetted revenge, pointed at those who caused the problem in the first place......

Presumably Elon Musk would have a bright idea which would require the government giving him hundreds of billions of dollars which the US government do immediately of course. He then makes the situation much much worse but has at least boosted his personal wealth.
Trapped on earth the billionaire class stop trying to compete against each other with rockets and Mars missions and instead begin a race to explore and drill down to the centre of Antarctica. Eventually they drill too far and awaken... Something very old and implacably evil. Cosmic horror ensues.

Very Lovecraftian.

MushMonster · 05/08/2026 18:06

Monsters from both the moon and Antarctica! And we can bring a drilling crew, like in Armageddon.
Now, my favourite is Stargate, so it would be great if this drilling through Antarcticas hidden rocky caverns awakes the Stargate guys and armies pour into Earth from far far away, like billion light years away. And they take Musk with them. Please!

A grey alien a singl grey alien is going to move debris from the alien-killing crater to Earth and then place it conspicuously near main city. Someone is going to find it, taste it (because humans are weird) and everything is going to go to shit. S e e. You in the future.

Girasoli · 07/08/2026 08:14

That's the plot of The Time Machine! They wanted to mine the moon and cracked it, changing the tides and causing destruction.

That film gave me nightmares when I saw it.

MyThreeWords · 07/08/2026 09:49

Could it be that Musk was actually the shape-shifting Thing from Antarctica all along, and his entire career has been building up to the 'accidental' collision on the moon to awaken his alien brethren?

He wanted to waken them so that they would come and get him after his unfortunate crash in Antarctica, and the whole movie is essentially a dark remake of ET ("EM go home!")
