Sudden severe stomach pains and indigestion, should I seek urgent advice?

Ive suddenly developed indigestion and every couple of .i utes get a very bad bout of pain across my stomach and then it goes away and rge. Comes back. I need medical advice but don't want to go to a and e because I'll be there for hours. When the pain comes im literally streaming and a couple of seconds it's gone. I think this is what labour contractions are like , but I wouldn't know because i've never had a baby. I feel sick but not to the point of wanting to throw up.So I think this is due to some chicken.I ate earlier.I don't know.I really don't know I need to do something because I can't carry on like this

OP it sounds like food poisoning, but could really be so many things, are you being sick? And are you home alone or is someone with you? Maybe if you are still having the waves of pains give 111 a shout.

Swizzel · 05/08/2026 02:09

Ring 111 and get some medical advice. It could be any number of things, such as gallstones or appendicitis. If the pain is making your scream then you should seek help immediately - please either go to A&E or ring 111 now.

Im not being sick but I feel sick. 111 are useless as you wait hours for a doctor to call ans a few years ago a doctor didn't call ne back until 3am

How about a warm bath and massage your stomach in case it’s digestive issues.

This sounds like when I had gallstone attacks. The middle of the night waking with it and vomiting is also classic. Please get seen to as I needed up with pancreatitis after about 4 of these attacks over the space of a few weeks. Ring 111 and if needed get straight to A&E. I really hope it isn't for your sake. Take care
Edited to say I never waited long in A&E waiting room due to this, out of hours gp was going to send an ambulance as could hear me screaming in background of the call. I was triaged immediately for pain.

Ring 111. U say they are useless, but priority will surely be given to cases on a need basis. I hope you are feeling better soon OP.

It doesn't sound much like food poisoning as there is no vomiting or diarrhea.

What happened a few years ago is irrelevant to today.

You need to seek medical advice for a new and severe intermittent abdominal pain.

Read the NHS page on stomach ache - it tells you when to phone 111 and when to go to A&E.

Or you can put your symptoms into 111 online and see what it advises or phone 111 who will advise over the phone.

I would call an ambulance.
What if your appendix were about to burst?
Otherwise make an emergency appointment with a gastro specialist.
Maybe your stomach needs pumping?
Could also be a stuck gall stone about to give you blood poisoning?
You might need a camera down your throat?
Ambulance it would be for me.

Fell asleep and woke up and all the symptoms gone very, very strange, but I'm fine. Now , all back to normal , no idea all that was about , but I was so much pain , and now all the pain has completely and miraculously disappeared

Glad you feel better. If this is a gallstone problem it will happen again. Perhaps book in to see your GP

Funchythesnowwoman · 05/08/2026 08:04

I agree re gallstones.

MabelsBeats · 05/08/2026 08:13

Another one coming on to say gallstones. Your symptoms sounded oh so familiar. If it happens again, do not delay, go to A&E and say ‘I think I have gallstones, I’m in agony, regular painkillers aren’t helping’. Full disclosure, this went on for years with me, and ultimately it was NOT the NHS who figured it out, it was me, paying for a private ultrasound. Now gallbladder free and my quality of life is so much better. I spent years being fobbed off and told it was IBS - don’t be like me!

bestbefore · 05/08/2026 08:16

Agree gallstones, see gp and they can sort a scan. My pain was awful and the minute it stopped it was like nothing had happened. Often happens after eating a high fat meal
