I like watching documentaries about music so have seen a load of old documentaries that he's in or featured in

This may sound odd but he looks different in almost every single picture taken of him. Its very chameleon like, very strange. I literally wouldnt recognise him in many of the pictures. Ive noticed this over the years.

Just watching a documentary again now about Cream and in every clip, he looks completely different.

No Bowie always looked like Bowie even in different guises and characters.

And Clapton wasnt channelling anything or anyone different, just different hair cuts or facial hair which seems to render him unrecognisable for some reason.

I saw a really interesting documentary about his early life and rejection from his mum.

He doesn't seem to have been the nicest man, which is a shame. I have read several books and he featured in them, rock bios and such, and the one written by the muse who was with one guy then the next. It seems that Eric Clapton came from a difficult and hurtful upbringing, and didn't resolve that, and became massively famous and in the limelight while still struggling with trauma from childhood.
