Decided some aspects of my bedroom look awful. What are your thoughts on these potential tweaks? Pics attached

It’s dawned on me that my bedroom isn’t looking as nice as it could so I’ve mocked up a couple of images and wanted to know your thoughts

I’d go slightly darker with the curtains - more oatmeal / flax as opposed to cream and perhaps with a little texture in them and I’d perhaps go a little less busy with the gallery wall by the mirror

Just wanted to gain a few opinions! Rest of the room I’m happy with - we have a thick pile cream carpet, a cream and gold feature type wall and reclaimed wood furniture

@HereForFootie it’s from John Lewis, about 4 years ago. Was quite pricey at £400 and I’m not sure I’d choose it in 2026 but it does its job

Your walls look in good condition. You could paint a nice soft colour for a lot less then £400!

Have a play with the dulux visualiser. Maybe a blue or lilac? Something dreamy. Lilacs often play well in light rooms as the colour changes in different lights throughout the day.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 09:13

@Violetdeparma I do know!

You need a longer curtain pole . The tie backs are outside of the drop.

If you paint the radiator the same colour as the wall it will disappear

LaurieFairyCake · 02/08/2026 09:44

Both tweaks good 👍🏻

Londonmummy66 · 02/08/2026 11:49

If you need to keep the jewellery boxes out put them one to either side of the chest and the tray in the middle to make it symmetrical, rather than the boxes in the middle. Ideally find a gold container that could sit in the tray to hold any clutter you must have out.

I agree about having curtains that fill the entire alcove width rather than just the window space - it will make the window look bigger and more generous.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 12:09

@Londonmummy66 that’s quite a good idea! Thoughts?

Will get my husband to lower the mirror when he’s back home. To his delight I’m sure!

I like that. Centre the mirror over the unit when you adjust it.

I’m confused as to how you can use the free-standing mirror there, how do you stand in front of it?
I’d be brave and paint the walls and radiator a much darker colour, like green. But my own bedroom is dark green so I’m biased.

The tiny vase of artificial flowers on the chest of drawers is quite grannyish, is there a story behind that?

Have you considered a coloured bedcover or cushions? Without seeing the bed or headboard it’s tricky to get a full sense of the room. Do you have fitted wardrobes?

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 14:38

@UhOhRatPoo there’s loads of room in front of the free standing mirror - it’s a large room so I can’t show all angles of it

the flowers in the little glass vase are real. They were a gift from my daughter the other day so I’ll keep them if that’s ok 😂

No to painting the room dark green …

yes I have fitted wardrobes

inhave a thick pure silk bed throw in cream but that’s not on the bed right now as too hot

I sense our tastes may be quite different 😂

Apologies I was trying to be helpful but have clearly offended you. It looked like the mirror was in a corner next to the head of the bed.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 14:43

It’s a little bit better!

still to do is the curtains - the main thing really! - , the curtain pole , and lowering the mirror.

unusually have a silk throw on the bed and two other pillows of course. Bedding is always pure linen in washed pink or cream.

wont be painting it or changing the feature wall alas. I definitely could be persuaded too but husband could not

@UhOhRatPoo oh gosh you haven’t offended me! Far from it. Sorry if my tone didn’t come across very well! I posted expecting all sorts of comments - I know we all have such vastly different tastes in decor!

Short curtains should be banned. Long ones will look much better.

I’d put the mirror or a picture shelf and add interest with a couple of plot plants or lamps.

The wallpaper wall is not good.

UhOhRatPoo · 02/08/2026 14:53

😀. Your last pic makes the mirror position clear now. I had interpreted the bit of wood from the bed footboard as part of a bedside table. We do have different tastes, you’re right. I love your big ceiling fan and the inherited mirror though, and the new wider curtains should look great. Sure the vase of flowers is lovely in real life, and it’s better on the windowsill, but one thing I have learned re my own decorating style is I always go too small and bigger things look more stylish. Have you thought about larger bedside lamps?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/08/2026 14:54

I'd have a tall(ish) palm by the window so I wasn't looking out at just brown/brick and a large pink Anthurium on the drawers for height and colour.

Add in a couple of other darker, dusky pink things - such as a larger vase for more flowers - on the windowsill (along with a longer pole and floor length, light coloured thermal/light blocking curtains to fill the recess) and maybe a cream radiator cover to tick over until whenever you replace it.

That might even out the proportions a little and bring subtle life and colour into it.

I prefer the light oatmeal tones.
Longer length curtains.
Large silver mirror - oblong.
Remove the artificial flowers.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 15:07

@SaraHoliday they’re not artificial!!! They’re a real posy!

Oops sorry! In my defence, it is difficult to tell on the photo! 😳

CrapAbble · 02/08/2026 15:26

Get a longer curtain rail to hang above the recess, about an inch or two down from the ceiling and hang the curtains so that when they're open, they just hide the edge of the recess. It'll make your window look bigger and you'll get maximum light into the room during the day. It'll also look tidier and more luxurious when you've closed them.

CrapAbble · 02/08/2026 15:28

Yewtown · 02/08/2026 09:08

Have a curtain rail the full width of the recess. Hang full length curtains so they drape at the edge of the window. No tie backs, if you go for eyelet curtains use spacers to give a more elegant feel.

Nooo, the curtains should hang in front of the recess, not inside it!

It's a nice room and makes a lot more sense now we've seen the other photos, including the bed and the position of the full-length mirror.

I definitely think the curtains are your number one issue at the moment and replacing them will make a huge difference.

BitCoinBillionaire · 06/08/2026 21:38

In case anyone was interested … here’s the after

Apart from the pole not being robust enough, the end bits not being ‘dramatic’ enough and quite a few holes to fill in … I’m really pleased with the actual curtains! We will sort it out ultimately next week

PS for the perfectionists - please ignore the pillow cases! One is silk and one is copper and it’s throwing off the vibes 😂
