Decided some aspects of my bedroom look awful. What are your thoughts on these potential tweaks? Pics attached

It’s dawned on me that my bedroom isn’t looking as nice as it could so I’ve mocked up a couple of images and wanted to know your thoughts

I’d go slightly darker with the curtains - more oatmeal / flax as opposed to cream and perhaps with a little texture in them and I’d perhaps go a little less busy with the gallery wall by the mirror

Just wanted to gain a few opinions! Rest of the room I’m happy with - we have a thick pile cream carpet, a cream and gold feature type wall and reclaimed wood furniture

That’s a good shout to lower the mirror. I’m 5 ft 3 at a push and have never been able to actually look in it 😂 Don’t need to but for aesthetic purposes you’re right - it needs to come down just a touch

I need to shut the curtains as the room is very very light - the Roman blind is Blackout but light seeps round the edges so curtains are pulled each night.

Not an issue moving the washing basket. I do have a freestanding mirror to contend with as well!

Can’t change the blind really - it was expensive and is only a couple of years old. Same with the free stand mirror - was expensive so for now, has to stay

Where did you buy the long mirror?

Soontobe60 · 02/08/2026 08:52

How about these?

@Nutmuncher the freestanding mirror was 400 quid only 4 years ago! Alas, I can’t just put it on marketplace. It may look ‘awful’ but it’s oak and rubber so has to stay.

I think you seem a bit tied by things you've bought, which were expensive. Is there somewhere else in the house the mirror and blind could go?

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 08:54

@HereForFootie it’s from John Lewis, about 4 years ago. Was quite pricey at £400 and I’m not sure I’d choose it in 2026 but it does its job

Yes, that looks a lot better.

EverMissWicklowSometimes · 02/08/2026 08:55

Tidy away the clutter on the chest of drawers for a start. Also it's all a bit bland - needs some colour. I would paint the walls a darker shade. Cream/linen curtains are fine but not with magnolia walls.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 08:56

@IsoldeWagner yes you’re probably right - I am a bit tied to things I’ve put quite a bit of money into. Plus my husband is already eye rolling at my plans for the room - which I think I can bring in for about 300 quid tbh! He will shake his head at me getting rid of the blind and long mirror sadly

I think swap the blind for light roller blind. Curtains - if you are choosing for styling then fill the recess with a longer pole and make them cream and floor length, but if you actually want to be able to use them without throwing away money on your heating, they need to stay short.

I think with the chest of drawers it needs to be centred on the space rather than hard left, and have the mirror centred over it and more closely connected to it, ie lower to the surface. However you also need the mirror to work for you to see into. Ideally I'd achieve this by replacing the mirror with a bigger one. I think IKEA do a nice big round one. Then with the stuff on the chest of drawers - everyone has stuff - rather than being a solid bank of it move most of the stuff to the edges and either have nothing in the middle, or just one thing. Think if it like a V shape with the tallest things towards the edges. But I think it's definitely not awful, it's fine as it is, and my suggestions are only because you specifically asked for them.

Oh dear! That ties you, a bit. Can they go elsewhere in the house? Could you take the mirror off the stand and attach it to a wall?

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 08:58

@Soontobe60 yes to the mirror and the prints like that. I think that’s a go-er . And yes to the single plant on the windowsill. I like that so that will be put in place!

have to have my leather jewellery boxes out though and have to have the round gold tray. So the baskets - nice though they look - is a no

Can’t go bigger on the mirror unfortunately- much as I’d perhaps like to! The mirror has great sentimental value - was a wedding present to my mum and dad in the 70s and i took it from their house when they died so of course I’m fully committed to it now 😂

Have two mirrors ? Keep their mirror just move it elsewhere

400? You were robbed. I’d still take the hit to just get it gone.

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 09:01

@Abracadabra12 yes you’re right. Some good suggestions there. I’m keen to avoid the ‘bitty’ gallery wall as we are just not bohemian enough to carry it off

the house is all cream, oak, granite work tops, white sofa, pale carpets. I’m not great at injecting colour

So is the longer cream curtains and gallery wall pictures the ai? I agree id go a bit darker on the curtains. I would go bigger on the mirror for the gallery wall and maybe two wall lights on either side of a larger mirror rather than all the frames? But it a lovely room either way

This with the two lamps sounds lovely.
Personally I think the jewellery is fine !

Violetdeparma · 02/08/2026 09:03

But I would have frames and wall lights

deetss · 02/08/2026 09:03

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 08:49

@deetss where would I put the curry? 😂 it IS a bit one note tbh. Walls are a very very pale and warm toned creamy pink, doors are oak (we have two- one to the en suite) and the furniture is reclaimed Tuscan wood.

I have absolutely no idea where curry came from 😂

rwalker · 02/08/2026 09:03

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 08:51

@rwalker now I like the look of that in someone else’s house but I’m not sure of that wouldn’t be a bit ‘busy’ in my bedroom!

It get you tone the frames down to match yours you can even use frameless mirrors
the picture is just for lay out because your mirror wouldn’t fit in with those

BitCoinBillionaire · 02/08/2026 09:06

Ok. Plan for today

I’ll sort the top of the chest of drawers and the windowsill

I’ll lower the mirror

I’ll pop a plant on the windowsill

I’ll order my new curtains and curtain pole - going to get an antique gold pole to tie in with the one wallpapered wall

I’ll update later on. If anyone is even slightly interested

the suggestions have been so useful so thank you. I can’t implement them all sadly because I just can’t bin mirrors and blinds and completely start afresh - I’d like to keep under £300 ish if possible.

Paler floor length curtains are a great idea. I understand why you need blind plus curtains, so do I.

I understand your commitment to the mirror but it doesn’t have to live there does it? A single bigger mirror would look better. I’ve had the ‘wall of charity shop mirrors’ thing and it is great in a hallway but too busy for a bedroom IMO.

Is there a way to attach the freestanding mirror to the wall? That would look neater and take up less space.

Yewtown · 02/08/2026 09:08

Have a curtain rail the full width of the recess. Hang full length curtains so they drape at the edge of the window. No tie backs, if you go for eyelet curtains use spacers to give a more elegant feel.

Violetdeparma · 02/08/2026 09:09

Fire risk . As an aside op do you know that magnifying mirrors on window can cause fire with sun hitting them and them causing a laaer like beam to cause fire

Put the mirror somewhere else and buy a bigger one. It does nothing for the bedroom.
Also inject a bit of colour with pictures and prints. It’s all very brown. And agree it needs longer curtains to make more of a feature.
