Wall of Death by REM better than Richard and Linda Thomson

That’s fighting talk! I’ll reluctantly acknowledge, though, that Robert Plant and the Band Of Joy do a good version of “House of Cards”. Bonnie Raitt’s “Dimming of the Day” is worth a listen, too.

(Oh, and I just knew some cloth-eared philistine would mention the Disturbed version of “Sound of Silence” It always comes up, and it’s always so wrong.)

Placebos version of running up that hill

FilmsandBooks · 02/08/2026 01:45

Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust (and I’m a huge Bowie fan)

Frankie Goes to Hollywood Born to Run

I can think of a few. Tainted Love by Soft Cell - I do like the original by Gloria Jones but I think Soft Cells version is even better. I didn't actually find out that it was a cover version until about 10 years ago! I prefer The Stranglers version of Walk on by to Dionne Warwicks original, and I think The Pet Shop Boys version of Always on my mind is much better than Elvis's.

notimagain · 02/08/2026 05:32

The Wilson sisters plus Jason Bonham plus about a hundred others live version of Stairway to Heaven, live in front of the then POTUS at the Kennedy centre back on 2012.

Status Quo's version of Rockin' All Over The World
Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me
Brian May's version of Since You've Been Gone (specifically live at the Brixton Academy in the 90s)

I think for me, the best cover is Eva Cassidy's version of Field of Gold

bloominoreilly · 02/08/2026 06:41

Walk On By has been mentioned - I love the Helen Shapiro version

kab89 · 02/08/2026 06:48

Linkin Park's version of Rolling in the Deep. I love the Adele original but Linkin Park is more my type of music.

The best cover version ever made was We Can Work It Out by Stevie Wonder. I will be taking no questions at this time.

Yes!

All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix
Sunshine of Your Love - I will take both the Spanky Wilson version, and Ella Fitzgerald's over Cream.

Spirit in the Sky. I much prefer Dr and the Medics version.

Missey85 · 02/08/2026 07:50

EmpressaurusKitty · 02/08/2026 07:58

The best cover of Hallelujah I ever heard was by Lorna Brooks at a concert in North London, sometime around the millennium.

Blogswife · 02/08/2026 08:05

I was coming on to say this song which is superb but I don’t think the Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes original was a dirge was it?

It was compared to The Communards version imo.

PrancingPanda · 02/08/2026 09:38

Walk on By - Stranglers
Don't Leave Me This Way- Communards
The Man Who Sold The World- Nirvana
Valerie- Amy Winehouse (love the video too)
Easy and I Started A Joke- Faith No More

Came here to say this, my very first thought on reading the thread title. It’s epic. I love seeing it live too. His voice is unique.

I’ve just downloaded it- amazing version!
