What brands are worth paying for?

I can afford bit more due to a (sad) windfall so I’m looking to upgrade my boring cheapy things for nicer ones.

For example, I treated myself to a Dock and Bay towel for my holiday and it was brilliant so worth it although I did think it was pricey when I bought it. I’m not used to not just getting the cheapest option so could do with a few pointers.

What other brands do you think are worth it? If using them makes you feel happy that’s even better. It’s been a shit few months. Thanks.

Shoes, get some decent shoes. Look in style and beauty for good ideas. I have got a few from there that I love, but they are too subjective to mention here. A good pair of shoes is worth spending money on.

Save some money for a good smart winter coat and maybe a new handbag. By end of August John Lewis should have some new seasons stock in, if not before.

I bought a velvet White Stuff coat last autumn, worn a lot.

Cotton baby cord jeans from Cotton Traders are great imo. Some nice colours, comfy and very flattering fit.

A Paul Costello handbag. Not outrageous prices but great quality. You’ll get a lovely one from their online outlet for under £100.

I've got a couple of Paul Costelloe handbags, as above. Very nice quality. 👍

Archies flip flops. I wear mine all day everyday at the moment. They have a moulded footbed and are so comfortable. I’ve got loads of cheap flip flops but Archies are in a different league.

Thank you! I’ve actually got some Archies. They’re brilliant

Some ideas -
A really good rain coat such as rains, stutterheim, Isla Jacobsen.
A great quality suitcase
Botox 😂
A shark LED mask
AirPods
Clothes in natural fabrics if you don’t already - cotton/ linen/ wool
A cashmere jumper for winter
A great quality kitchen knife
Ninja cooking appliance

Loccitaine for several products. Their Shea butter (they call it Karite) body lotion is the best thing I have ever used on my dry skin.

Hipswan low trainer style socks are bees knees. Made from Organic cotton and they genuinely stay up, rather than creep down under the foot.

Great! For a real treat how about some Penhaligons perfume? It’s expensive but it really does last all day and the scents are wonderfully layered and complex.

Or some good cosmetics? I like Urban Decay for eyeliners and palettes and also Trinny London for mascara, BB cream and cream eyeshadows and blushers.

I’ve got a couple of dresses from Hobbs and they fit really well. In fact if you want a few good quality staples why not book a personal shopper in John Lewis or somewhere like that and get a capsule autumn wardrobe….

Vax · 02/08/2026 07:29

I’m going to go to John Lewis and try the penhaligans and make up.

I will get some AirPods too and look at all the other things. It feels a bit alien but I know my mum will be smiling at me upgrading all these things.

I used my windfall to buy a Ninja knife set and air fryer, an upgrade from what I had.

Frumpitydoo · 02/08/2026 08:09

Barbour

Oh and pureology shampoo and conditioner is incredible. Especially the one in the lilac bottle. You can actually get bigger bottles on Amazon and it works out very cost effective!
