Where and what beauty products do women over 40 buy?

Ladies over 40, where do you usually shop for beauty products, and what helps you look a little more polished, other than Botox and lip fillers? I’m not interested in those. My brother is finally getting married, so I’d love to look my best for the wedding 😅

Hiya - 41 here, dry and prone to spots- here is my list. I have tried a lot!
Cleanser - boots salicylic acid cleanser
Exfoliater - Beauty Pie Wonderscrub
Retinol - Beauty Pie
Moisturiser - Simple vitamin c
SPF - Aveno face 50 SPF or simple 50 SPF
BB cream - Dr Jarts BB cream. This is incredible. Coverage is amazing and it’s also skincare
concealer - Nars, colour corrector Huda beauty, mascara - too faced brown, contour / bronzer - beauty pie.

i get a few bits from beauty pie through a friend but the more I use it the more I realise how high quality the stuff is and will likely exclusively get skincare from there when I run out (except Dr Jart BB which is irreplaceable)

Would you still recommend using retinol if someone has quite sensitive skin?

I have had really sensitive skin in the past and I started with bakuchiol which is a plant based alternative to retinol and can be used every night. Nivea do a cellular bakuchiol serum that never caused my skin any issues. The Inkey List also do a very gentle retinol for beginners and then a stronger version you can work up to. I'm still on the beginners version as I'm really careful with my skin barrier.

You could try a make over at a counter in one of the bigger department stores depending where you live? I use Brown Thomas here in Ireland.

I don’t rate Boots brand products at all as they make my skin hot and itchy.

Charlotte Tilbury brand does nice stuff. I don’t think MAC is as good as it was back in the 90’s?

Yes it is!

Morepositivemum · 02/08/2026 19:14

Has your skin always been on the dry side, or has it become drier as you’ve got older?

Definitely drier as I’ve gotten older BUT I used to be a religious water drinker and didn’t drink tea or fizzy drinks, and Nivea’s aqua moisturiser used to be the holy grail for me so not sure if it’s age or me not looking after myself the way I did!

I’m 78, use tret from Dermatica, and my skin is very sensitive. I combine it with a moisturiser. In the morning I use micellar water and spf 50. My routine is uncomplicated. I don’t need foundation, layers of this and that and various serums.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/08/2026 19:21

The best thing is eating a balanced diet, not too much alcohol and caffeine, plenty of exercise and sleep, not too much stress.

Products are really just tinkering round the edges on top of that. Yes, I use a moisturiser, mostly remember to take makeup off before bed, but I don't have a complex beauty routine nor use a lot of expensive products.

I am 48 and I have rosacea, dry skin with large open pores. I have been using Beauty of Joseon SPF 50 on my face , for the last 2 weeks, just to see if it would react with my very sensitive skin before I go on holiday and a miracle has happened. My pores have shrunk, the redness has gone, my skin is moisturised and people are commenting on how young I look. I got it from Super drug. My skin hasn't looked this good or healthy in 15 years.

I’ve read about Vaseline and seen that quite a lot of people use it as part of their skincare routine, but I haven’t come across anything suggesting that it could be harmful. Could you share a link to a reliable study, or is this just hearsay?

Vaseline has been used for so long. The trick is to put the moisture on then seal it with petroleum jelly.

I think the only studies will have been done by companies who want to advertise their own products as a substitute.

If everyone here is over 40 they've surely grown up with the same products, many all natural, but hey add elements like seaweed, whale sperm, antioxidant, green plant exfoliate and you're on a winner!

InfoSecInTheCity · 02/08/2026 21:25

nearly 43 here and with a job that makes me scowl and swear a lot which is starting to show on my face 😂

Since around May I’ve been trying very hard to be consistent with a skincare routine and I have noticed a reduction in my rosacea, reduced bags under my eyes and generally more even skin tone.

Morning

  • cleanse face
  • hydrating serum
  • Azelaic acid (The ordinary 10% suspension)
  • CeraVe eye cream
  • House of joseon SPF 50

Evening:

  • cleanse
  • Hydrating serum
  • Azelaic acid - except twice a week when I use The Inkey Advanced Retinal serum
  • CeraVe moisturiser

@Pongomiss oooooh, that sounds really good so I straight away visited the Superdrug website and they do two different SPF 50. Would you mind telling me which one you use please?

At the moment, Vaseline essential healing , but I don’t spend a fortune on them because most contain the same basic ingredients. I have used Cerave, Simple, Mixa, Aldi’s own brand. At Christmas I put an expensive one on my list in the hope that someone will buy me a little luxury- eg Elemis, Clarins!

This is the one I’ve been using and I agree with @Pongomissthat it’s a really nice moisturiser/spf. I haven’t tried their other one, mainly because they have this one in Sainsburys and my local Boots which is where I shop https://www.boots.com/beauty-of-joseon-relief-sun--rice-and-probiotics-50ml-10348088

Yes it's that one with the probiotics. I also like the fact that it feels quite light and non greasy.

Yello24 · 03/08/2026 07:00

Was interested in that charcoal tooth powder but have been looking at reviews and advice is to avoid abrasive charcoal based powders. Damaging to enamel. Very surprised dentist recommended it.
There was a good Sliced Bread podcast in BBC Sounds on what skin products actually work and are worth the money. If you wanted to get a summary of the different active ingredients and concentrations. There is SO much guff on the market.
Anyway I use the SPF cream and a night cream from Lidl. And Simple face wash. No skin problems. Am 62. But if you’re a Botox user you’re probably after something more fancy.

Girlintheframe · 03/08/2026 07:02

I think the most important thing really is getting your skincare right. That helps massively. When it comes to makeup light reflecting products will be your best bet. Skin looses its luminosity as we age. Getting your skincare right helps that as does the right make up products. Skincare however is very trial and error and what suits one person won’t necessarily suit another.

I used to be a beauty therapist and honestly I find it's better to use less as I get older. I mix a glowy formulation foundation with my SPF moisturiser in the morning, heavy foundation is aging. I bought a packet of baby muslin cloths from Amazon and use those to exfoliate while cleansing my face morning and night. Honestly better exfoliating than any product I've tried. A cream blush placed higher up on the cheekbones than you would in your younger years, totally lifts the face. I like to get lash lifts done so if I bother with mascara it's only a tiny swish of it rather that packing it on trying to get a result.
Most creams are rubbish. The only things that really works is tret, sunscreen and keeping things hydrated. Moisturiser yes, but expensive is not much better than a cheap effective one.
I find finding a flattering lip colour is more important as I get older, just this alone makes you look a lot more polished.

I use a daily moisturiser with spf in it, to save doing another cream after - at the moment its a clinique one

I also use a night cream, using lancome hydra zen at the moment mainly because it smells nice

If you want a long lasting lip gloss then I like fenty beauty, uncuffed is a good neutral one but there's also a good strong red in that range
