Where and what beauty products do women over 40 buy?

Ladies over 40, where do you usually shop for beauty products, and what helps you look a little more polished, other than Botox and lip fillers? I’m not interested in those. My brother is finally getting married, so I’d love to look my best for the wedding 😅

4-5 days to London

Thank you! Have ordered. I think my endless black coffee/red wine doesn’t help.

hahabahbag · 02/08/2026 09:53

take a trip to boot number 7 counter, larger branches, they are a good option for those who want to look good but not spend stupid amounts, they will do a bit of a makeover on you then give you a list of what they used, also if the wedding is local you could try to get an appointment on the morning of the wedding! I find proper make up artists you book make me orange despite claiming they know what they are doing, I don’t like that full look whereas in boots they listen and do what you ask for!

Where do you get it from?

Amazon!!! Which I know is bad but it’s always cheap ok Amazon and also online quite rurally, so we have few options here.

Has anyone used Froya organics? My sm is flooded with adverts for it currently.

I’m wondering if adding turmeric to a decent moisturiser would work (adding fresh piperine too, of course!) It’s a natural anti-inflammatory. Might turn me yellow, tho!

I would avoid Froya..... I've only heard negative experiences from people that have used them and it seems to be a bit of a scam repeat charging people's cards.

GameOfJones · 02/08/2026 10:37

The things that have made the biggest difference for me are the evidence-backed ones I think!

Vitamin C serum and SPF every morning.

Retinol serum and exfoliating acid toner on alternate evenings, not at the same time. Followed by a bog standard face cream for a bit of hydration.

I use any old cleanser for washing my face as it's on my skin for less than a minute.

And mainly it's the boring stuff..... drinking lots of water, prioritising sleep and eating less junk and more whole foods.

I agree with a PP that if I take more care of my skin I need less make-up. My skincare and make-up routine takes under 5 minutes in the morning.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm as a primer.

Erborian BB cream.

Elf liquid blush and tubing mascara.

Laura Geller jelly tinted lip balm.

I take care of my hair, get regular haircuts and keep it neat and have my brows shaped and tinted and that makes a big difference.

I use Avene moisturiser and le Roche possy spf, cerave eye cream and nars concealer (they save my eyes!!), Aimee Connolly primer and rimmel perfect match foundation and mac setting spray. Mascara L’Oréal and eyeshadow L’Oréal too! Night time Clinique take the day off and clarins night cream

skin is dry, I’m 46, my skin is pretty good (I can say this because my hair and body is horrible atm so I need to remember this😉)

This is the first time I’ve heard of Avenue suiting someone. :)

yes and I didn't like it

What my dermatologist recommended 12 years ago, have not strayed from it since (I see the derm every 6 months or so) and I think it is working beautifully. Am now mid-40s.

Morning

Cerave hydrating cleanser
Vitamin C serum
Azelaic acid cream (skin tone)
Avene moisturizer
SPF 50

Evening

Cerave cleanser
Tretinoin
Avene moisturizer

Gah81 · 02/08/2026 12:42

Ah, and wearing big hats everywhere. I am known for my straw hat collection (all shapes and sizes, to suit every outdoor occasion).

dogsmaid · 02/08/2026 12:58

Agree about hair, I use Pureology which my hair likes.

Skin has always been good and clear so I don’t overload it. I use vit C serum (medik 8) and moisturiser (mix this up) in the morning. Cleanser, night cream (trying medicube jelly which I really like) & eye cream (josean) in the evening, alternate with retinol and I have a LED mask thing.

Make up - have never worn foundation, would use a skin tint when I need more coverage for certain things, Laura mercier or erborian.
Wear bronzer & blusher every day, I like Charlotte tilbury, Chanel, Benefit, Saia.
Mascara has to be tubing otherwise it ends up under eyes
I like Mac lipsticks if wanting colour but day to day just wear lip balm.
I have my eyebrows shaped and tinted as I’m fair
Spf (usually Ultrasun)

Probably spelled all the brands wrong so apologies!

dogsmaid · 02/08/2026 12:58

And yes to straw hat, introduced them this year.

Where do you buy tretinoin

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/08/2026 14:02

I can't afford all the fancy bits and pieces. I use elf moisturiser with SPF. This is a recent thing - I used to use whatever was cheapest - often Aldi Lacura which is fab. I was my face with water and use a cheap face wash to clean. The best thing for skin is Sri king loads of water. I may have lots of other things wrong but I've always had good skin!
I never wear make up unless going out out, even then never foundation, just a tinted moisturiser, bronzer (cheeks and eyes), mascara and lip oil (used to be gloss)

Cotswoldmama · 02/08/2026 14:07

Skin+me for the tretinoin every night. I used superdrug B. Cleansing balm and vitamin c serum in the morning at the moment I'm using a Simple one. Then SPF 50 or a bb or foundation with SPF I'm using a No7 foundation at the mo with SPF 50. L'Oréal infallible conclear is great all round and really helps make pores look smaller.

If you interested in trying skin+me you can use my code below for first and 5th month free just £3.50 p&p but it does take about 3 months to see results.

KrazyKatty · 02/08/2026 14:25

You could try a make over at a counter in one of the bigger department stores depending where you live? I use Brown Thomas here in Ireland.

I don’t rate Boots brand products at all as they make my skin hot and itchy.

Charlotte Tilbury brand does nice stuff. I don’t think MAC is as good as it was back in the 90’s?

Gah81 · 02/08/2026 14:44

@laura1991manchester my Tretinoin is prescription but you can probably find alternatives.

Oh ok...so it can't be purchased without prescription?

Would you still recommend using retinol if someone has quite sensitive skin?

dogsmaid · 02/08/2026 15:46

@MonicaMoneIm not sure tbh, you can start with a very low one and build up tolerance I believe.

You can get it via online pharmacies ie dermatica, skin and me and the like. I got prescribed Adapalene which is similar to tret by dermatica.

RedGreen2 · 02/08/2026 16:29

Any day moisturiser which has SPF50 is ideal - I use a L'Oréal one.

For make up dont go too heavy - I use some Trinny London/Charlotte Tilbury/Estee Lauder. Usually a light coloured eye shadow, some eye liner on upper lid, mascara and blusher.

A tinted lip gloss is good as well, as my lips have faded!

BeautyPie is amazing - I highly recommend. There are details on their site to provide guidance on what products to buy. Also second at home teeth whitening.

Has your skin always been on the dry side, or has it become drier as you've got older?
