How do you pronounce Adidas?

Inspired by the ‘how do you pronounce Asics’ thread.
I’ve always pronounced it AH-dee-das but am noticing lately more people saying ah-DEE-dus.
Is it that people are influenced by American pronunciation? (No idea if it is actually American pronunciation, it just sounds that way to me).. Or has it always been this way, and it’s just a regional variation? I don’t live in the same place I grew up, so it could easily be that!

AddyDass.

Add-e-das

Up in the north west here, it was always a-dee-dus. But apparently the correct pronunciation is a-di-das

I used the second one until a German exchange student educated me. So now it’s the first. And that was 40 years ago!!

Wallacem · 01/08/2026 17:13

Addy - das because they were named after their creator, Adolf "Adi" Dassler

Ah-di-dass

Scotland

Always pronounced it Addy Das here.

It’s German & so needs to be the first one. According to AI the second option exists as the English/American pronunciation.

How to say it: AH-dee-dahs

Where the stress goes: The emphasis is placed clearly on the first syllable (AH), and the name flows evenly with equal weight given to the remaining syllables without rushing.
Why: The name comes from founder Adolf "Adi" Dassler, combining his nickname "Adi" with the first syllable of his last name "Das".

Grew up saying A Dee Dus. Discovered why it should be Addy Dass as an adult and now say both. Young people seem to have reverted to A Dee Dus.

It’s German, so no stress on any syllable. Addy-dass.

Americans pronounce it incorrectly.

KittyHigham · 01/08/2026 17:28

Addydass more of a short i sound (as in pig) than an ee sound

PartoftheBand · 01/08/2026 17:31

Uh- DEE-das, as in...

Are you in there little foetus,
Would you like to come and meet us,
I will buy you some Adidas

Yes, this. Addy-dass.

Though someone should start a thread on the proper pronunciation of Nike. My 14 year old actually dragged me into the Nike store at Oxford Circus to make me listen to the staff saying 'Nike' to rhyme with 'bike', whereas I've always said Nike to rhyme with crikey. And I know the Greek Goddess of Victory was more NEE-key or NEE-kee...
