Birthstone for June

I have no idea where the appropriate place is for this thread but I am trying to understand what the birthstone is for June.

I am buying a birthstone necklace and the months are June and July. Everywhere says July is Ruby but there are so many options for June that I’m getting confused with what the actual birthstone for June is.

Can anyone confirm please?

Some say it’s Opal

TreesAtSea · 31/07/2026 22:15

Both pearls and opals are said to be unlucky, if you believe that kind of thing. There's the old saying, "Pearls are for tears". Not trying to be a downer, honest...my birthday is in June so I have a vested interest.

So, why do some say it’s moonstone or Alexandrite?

I was hoping it wasn’t pearl because I imagine a big pearl and a ruby together might look ridiculous on me. I’m quite small!

I’m a June birthday and it is pearl. I got a vintage pearl necklace for my 40th as a special gift.

I've heard moonstone said too. Maybe the superstitions have been taken to heart and that's led to other stones being used instead. But pearl's the one that's usually mentioned, I believe.

Although I’ve just googled and Moonstone and Alexandrite seem to be later additions so you can use any of the 3 if you prefer one of the others but I think Pearl is the original.

I actually didn’t realise some months have more than one stone.

Neither did I until I googled! Neither are my birthstone so I wanted to be certain.

Thanks all! I will ask the jeweller if ruby and pearl would work but if not, I can then ask about the other two options.

I've never heard moonstone as birthstone for June but I would imagine it's the same reason as Alexandrite is sometimes mentioned: it's much more modern.

Pearls are sometimes considered quite old fashioned (not by me) so occasionally there's a contemporary alternative. Moonstone has a similar shimmer to pearl but much more depth and is rarer.

Because it’s marketing bollocks!

This does make sense! I’m hoping I can design something modern so the pearl doesn’t look “old fashioned”. Thats the plan at least! 😂
