I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Brighton - seedy and horrible

New York the last time I went. Dirty and crowded. I’ve been many times and I used to love it but won’t go again.

And I’m not keen on Barcelona. I’ve been a few times and just can’t take to it.

Sunderland, with Africa coming a not very close second.

Oh fgs. And a whole continent. 🙈

Sunderland is fab. One of the best nights out and close to beautiful seaside resorts.

Hull-my ex lives there and within an hour of stepping off the train,we'd seen 3 drug deals (in broad daylight) and 2 shoplifters being arrested

Peterbrough-the place reeked of farts and I've never seen so many tattoos in one place

Blackpool-grotty,saw an old bloke getting a bj (on the seafront) at about 6pm by a really young woman (she looked like a sex worker)
The weekend just went from bad to worse

I'm from York and it was awful at weekends
Either a load of hen parties or playing 'dodge the dried puke' the following day

OMFG!

Dishwashersforever · 01/08/2026 09:12

Weirdly Florence. They understandably seem absolutely fed up of tourists and I in turn was fed up of of the blatant rudeness even when we were customers We went out of season too. Obviously it wasn’t everyone but we wouldn’t go back.

Jewelanemone · 01/08/2026 09:12

Sam Ratulangi Airport, Manado, North Sulawesi - ten years ago.

It's vastly improved now, but used to be a roasting hot metal building in a cleared space in the jungle. With awful toilets.

No way! Me and my husband want to go, might rethink 🤣

I had a lovely visit to Dublin in 2018. Went in January so got cheap hotel and flights. Didn't have to prebook anything. Nicely compact. Main museums free as in UK. Very friendly people.

Goinggonegone · 01/08/2026 09:13

Penrheidol estate, Penparcau, Aberystwyth. Tiny estate of about 8 houses. I was house hunting, and just driving in, felt horrendous sense of impending doom. Felt sure I would kill myself if I had to actually live there.

MotherofPearl · 01/08/2026 09:18

Niagara Falls town (Canadian side). The falls themselves are obviously beautiful but the town is ghastly. It’s all strip malls, awful themed restaurants, souvenir shops flogging cheap tat, and fast food places.

OhFeyreDarling · 01/08/2026 09:18

I didn't like Hong Kong, expensive and was harassed on every corner in Kawloon by Indian men trying to get you to buy a designer bag or suit. Never again

Also went to Llandudno the other day, that was a tad depressing 😕

And it STINKS

The people were mostly great when I went to New York, but yes, it does stink!

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 01/08/2026 09:20

Morocco. Anytime I was more than a few feet away from my dad I was really uncomfortable and tbh there were even a few moments when I was with him I was uncomfortable - and he’s a tall, scary looking man.

I will say though one place I enjoy that most mumsnetters don’t is Blackpool. I wouldn’t take my kids but me and DH have been for a night out a few times over the years and you always meet a character. Also the Blackpool Dungeon is the superior one in the UK, the actors just have better banter (yes I’ve been to all of them plus the one in Amsterdam).

Parky04 · 01/08/2026 09:23

Vegas. Just full of homeless people and prostitutes.

Cornwall in the winter. We went to collect two puppies from the breeder some 20 years ago and decided to make a weekend of it. The Eden project was cold and the food was dreadful. Everywhere was shut and the hotel we had booked for our overnight stay (plan was to have a day free, stay overnight, collect pups and go straight home) was dire. It was almost christmas and there were no lights up, nothing jingly at all.

The entire county of Cornwall is bad?? No, it's beautiful and spiritual. I had a great time at the Eden Project. I love it all. I wouldn't go in Summer though.

springyla · 01/08/2026 09:24

Kent. Every time I’ve been it’s been bleak and dull. A trip on the Romney and Hyde railway was a real low. I’m sure bits of it are lovely, and people from Kent seem to really like it, but honestly I think we should just unhook it and let it float off to sea.

Livelovebehappy · 01/08/2026 09:25

Oh, and I forgot to give a shout out to Bradford. I live here. It’s dire, although wasn’t always like this. Dirty, lawless and soulless. Don’t be fooled by the ‘City of culture’ label. It’s as far from cultured as you can get, and I feel embarrassed that people might want to visit on the back of that label.

I know 🤣 Crazy talk.

It wasn't one visit, but sadly a prolonged stay in Pontefract. Absolutely horrible people who scammed us out of a huge sum of money, everywhere we went people were horrible and everything extremely expensive and miserable. 😞 I felt like unless you're a "Northerner" they totally take advantage of you

So Pontefract has tarred the WHOLE of Yorkshire.

Posywosey · 01/08/2026 09:29

Budva in Montenegro (really liked other parts of the country).

it was filthy, the old town had buildings with PVC windows, and seemed to cater only for Russians looking for cheap beer.

Also found both Clacton and Great Yarmouth really run down and a bit scary.

Wow, three places I think are great 🤣

anotherside · 01/08/2026 09:29

I’m in no rush to return to New York. Brooklyn was nice enough, the rest was pretty underwhelming relative to its reputation.

Not a fan of Miami either. Miami Beach area is quite nice, but the city of Miami is pretty dull, just concrete everywhere for the most part and 100% car culture.

AelinAG · 01/08/2026 09:29

Warsaw

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 01/08/2026 09:29

Kensington. The place has no soul.

Yorkshire is huge and contains four counties!

Blackpool..run down and depressing!

I love it when Strictly goes there and the celebrities gush about how much they love it. I don't see any of them booking their holidays there.
