After 30 years as an active pedant, I am now trying VERY hard always to look at what people obviously mean, and not the way they express it. Not everyone has been taught about apostrophes.

But for the love of GOD- please stop saying “stag doo” “birthday doo”. Any other “doo”! Where did that come from?

I too was at primary school in the 70's and never had a spelling test. However I've always been an avid reader and enjoy writing, so I think my SPAG excellence (if I do say so myself!) probably comes from that.

It's '70s! Sorry, but it absolutely drives me mad how people shove an apostrophe in where you did. 😩

What is the correct way to write about multiple pre wedding events? Stag dos looks wrong. Stag do's is wrong. I can see I place for Stag doos, or dooze, even...?

I saw a comment recently about teaching with phonics and how it has affected younger people’s ability to spell. English is tricky - I think we would all agree! The pronunciation of words is not predictable or logical. Hence “do” is pronounced the same as “too” but not the same as “to”. Let’s not get started on all the different ways to pronounce words containing “ough”. So if people are writing “hen doo” it may be because they are conscious of how it’s pronounced. Perhaps they are right!! (And I say that as a pedant myself)

But, but, but - 'do', 'to', and 'too' (and 'two') all have the same long vowel sound. The only difference is the D and T consonant sounds.

To is tuh and too and two are tooo.

Being American, I wouldn't call these things a do. Hen parties and stag parties avoid the problem.

No, they only look wrong because people put in extra apostrophes. Like 1940s and 1950s. No need
They're plural, not possessive nor missing a letter.
So stag dos and hen dos are perfectly correct.

I have a great tip for recovering pedants: learn another language and you’ll then be more lenient. That’s what happened to me anyway. For full effect something like Mandarin or Hindi with a different script is best!

No, I corrected my German colleagues...

EBearhug · 01/08/2026 02:15

I did spelling tests in my 1970s primary school. I got gold stars for them sometimes. (I see the spellings inside my head, too.) I also did basic grammar at my 1980s middle school.

Stag dos. If you must! Think about up dos.

My children were at school in the 2000s and 2010s and both had regular spelling tests.

Its surprising how many times on here I find myself writing the words. I think stag dos looks like it should be pronounced stag doz. However, now I know.

I’m trying to think of other plural dos….I agree it looks like Doz. Maybe because of MSDos?

OP posts:
BeanNaGealai · 01/08/2026 09:15

I think the reason dos looks wrong is because do is a verb normally and when you add an s to make do into the present tense it becomes does not dos.

I think its because the single S on the end of a word is almost always a Z, as well as the single O, without an E at the end being read as a short vowel. There's not many examples because it's a colloquialisms, as PP pointed out the correct term is party. Similarly with hair, it's style not do.

Doh! Serves me right for claiming SPAG excellence 😁 I am suitably ashamed.

Disagree. They’re all homophones.

You’ll actually become even more pedantic IME.

Easily done. Because if you'd said The 70's approach to SPAG you'd have been right.
The same with 70's music, 70's hairstyles etc.

Not always, at least in my accent (Southern US). "To" is often a schwa sound (more like "tuh") depending on where the word is in the sentence.

And in my accent (not tied to any particular area of the UK). If I say 'I am going to the zoo too' too and zoo rhyme but to is shorter.
