My name is CurlewKate and I am a recovering pedant….

After 30 years as an active pedant, I am now trying VERY hard always to look at what people obviously mean, and not the way they express it. Not everyone has been taught about apostrophes.

But for the love of GOD- please stop saying “stag doo” “birthday doo”. Any other “doo”! Where did that come from?

I think you’ve fallen off the wagon.

I’ve never been off it so can’t blame you.

Also, I’m 40 and was taught about apostrophes at school - everyone has been taught, just some people live these lovely lives where a your in place of a you’re doesn’t send them into a rage. I’m jealous of them TBH!

Amandaholdenstits · 31/07/2026 09:19

I hope you are having sootable ferapy for your pendantry affliction.

AgentPidge · 31/07/2026 09:20

"This really should be in Pedants' Corner," she said pedantically.

Semi-literacy of the 'Chester Draws' and 'rest bite' variety, I assume.

I would assume. People read less.

But "do" IS pronounced the same as "to".

In a lot of languages, function words (grammar words) are not emphasised so they come out short, "do" is a bit of a mixed word but it can be a grammar/helper word as in "do you really want that" or a main verb as in "are you going to do it now?".
But in "hen do" it's probably more emphasised and it's a noun, so that might be why people think it's a different word.

As I sit here repeating phrases containing 'to' (in my fairly 'standard' accent), is it not something about stressed and unstressed syllables and the position of one's lips/teeth in forming them? And partly that If one stresses 'to' in 'I'm going to the zoo', it gives 'to' huge prominence in the sentence?

Like fuck am I reforming my pedantry. I actively enjoy it.

Oh the irony, your Grammar is shocking 😲 😂

Batch as in bachelorette party

As opposed to the composer😂 That would explain why I also confused too.

"change your ways and be more pleasant" 😂
Perhaps you could have that painted on your front room wall in cursive script, surrounded by flowers 😉

... to the left of an illuminated Live, Love, Laugh sign, presumably? Grin

Would it not be the pigeon that did that not you as the owner? Or are you a pigeon who owns a pigeon as a pet.

as an aside I saw a woman with a pet pigeon whilst we were on holiday last month.

I could be a very intelligent pigeon sitting here writing this to you 😀.

Its an old song i heard whilst growing up (scotland).

That reminds me of the woman in home alone with all the pigeons 🤣.

Haha, you beat me to this! Plenty of other languages available for those who want to capitalise nouns as a matter of course (she says, only being able to name one - German - with any certainty)

Ump · 31/07/2026 09:38

Some time ago there was a post on here that used "hendo" (all one word) in the title. I always think of them as hendos now.

God help you if you think someone's highest calling is to 'pleasantness'. Are you one of those bizarrely sheltered Mners whose social or professional life does not involve being roundly disagreed with, ever, from time to time? If not, I recommend you seeking it out. It would make you less easily knocked off balance if someone points out that a feather in the garden is more likely to be evidence of bird activity rather than a passing angel/the spirit of Great-Aunt Brenda returning to the earthly sphere.

Having a bad week? I'm pretty certain the post you're replying to was a joke.

Apart from the fact that the word "doo" doesn't exist, and if it did it wouldn't need an apostrophe in the plural.

Lots of words don't exist except in teens speak and then poof! they've been added to the dictionary. I'm gonna vote for doo and doo's to be added.

You shouldn't be such a snoob 😥

I thought that was Yorkshire slang for Henderson's Relish?
Side note of pedantry: I used to drive past the factory, which had a notice on the front saying that they'd been making Hendo's for "Over a 100 years".
Used to drive me mad.

BeanNaGealai · 31/07/2026 09:43

BeanNaGealai · 31/07/2026 09:04

Not for me they don’t. I have completely confused myself to the point where to now sounds like a made up word but both uses of to still sound the same.

Actually, cancel all that. I tried again and realised they do sound different. I would say "I'm going ta go to the zoo" where the a in ta is very short.

hairbearbunches · 31/07/2026 09:44

"I would of brought a vale for your hen doo but the shop didn't have any."

Vales I can get past, the rest not so much.

freerangethighs · 31/07/2026 09:47

Fair do(o)s !!

Velvera · 31/07/2026 09:48

I like 'doo' it sounds more fun than 'do'

Yes! I've seen "hen doo" on here loads of times and been a bit wtf every time Confused

Don't they make hen doo into fertiliser?

For me, it's et cetera abbreviated wrongly grinds my gears, wanted to correct somebody on a post recently with the post was so sad that I thought it wouldn't land well
On a beach, bright sunlight if none of this makes sense

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/07/2026 09:53

I’m a fully paid up grumpy old pedant, but I’ve never seen ‘hen doo’.

How do you feel about the usual hen do plural, though, OP? Would you allow the unlawful apostrophe in ‘hen do’s’ or does ‘hen dos’ feel acceptable even though it looks weird? (It does to me, anyway.)
