Weird false awakening dream , anyone had one ?

Had the weirdest thing last night , was asleep, thought I had woken up, everything was completely normal in my bedroom. I heard a noise downstairs and thought it was my husband come back early and thought that’s odd, dog jumped off the bed and I followed her downstairs but first odd thing was the lights didn’t work, at that point I thought oh maybe this is a dream , but I had to go with it . Then all sorts of horrible things happened but I knew it was a dream but couldn’t wake up. Then I woke up, and had to check I really was awake and it hadn’t happened by checking the dog was still there! Was then too scared to go back to sleep until it started getting light as was so freaked,
looks like a false awakening dream, type 2 according to Google
wonderd if anyone else had these and mainly how to avoid them really ! I’m scared about tonight !

I used to get many of these, but they've disappeared for the most part.

I think they happen in times of stress.

So think calm thoughts ? 😬

Agree with above poster. I’ve had them too always around very stressful periods or ill health. They are horrible and it stays with you all day.

I know...not very helpful of me.... Warm milk or chamomile tea before bed seems to help me.

Sorry wasn’t being snippy. And thank you .
weird thing is I’m not stressed at the moment .
had an episode of sleep paralysis while out of my mind with tiredness with a new born, but luckily only the once and that was horrific.
thought I might try night nurse or something tonight . Dh is away for a few nights and I’m always a bit wary at night in my own, but now I’m super wary !

Yep I’ve had this before and said to myself in my dream…..this is a dream. It’s so weird isn’t it. It’s a relief to actually wake up. I’ve had really strong dreams all my life and a lot of reoccurring ones. I remember some from when I was a child. My husband said if he was me he’d be scared to go to sleep 😂😂😂😂

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 30/07/2026 18:37

Those kind of dreams, also sleep paralysis are both hideous, particularly if you have them together, so I sympathise. I’d try reading a lighthearted novel or watching something funny before bed… but it’s unlikely to happen again, at least for a long while, so try not to worry.

LBFseBrom · 30/07/2026 18:38

Yes I have had dreams like that. They are lucid dreams.

backformoreofthesame · 30/07/2026 18:44

I find they are less likely if I sleep on my side

and I remember to try and breath calmly - not sure what happens in actuality but it does help calm the horror of it

Tarkan · 30/07/2026 18:49

I get them quite regularly, night terrors too. I’ve been going through a lot recently so very stressed like others have pointed out. It’s hell as I don’t get any rest when I’m asleep or awake now.

FeeLipa · 30/07/2026 18:59

I had one a few weeks ago, massively stressed with work so it's a bit of a relief I know the cause.

I woke up, wandered half asleep to the bathroom ( I even tripped up over the dog which is an actual regular occurrence)but noticed dd1s bedroom door was open. Went in to check on dd but the room was different. Where her bed would be against the wall the room was just huge and no dd.

I get these periodically. I realise I’m in a dream but can’t wake myself up. I also used to get sleep paralysis which I found terrifying. Luckily not had that for a while

Oh, I didn't think you were being snippy. Sorry - I'm not too good at projecting tone online!

Carouseloflife · 30/07/2026 19:53

I used to have them quite a lot. I think sleeping on your side helps, I only get them when asleep on my back.

giddyboo · 30/07/2026 20:03

Yes ive had them. Strangely enough when ive drank cherry brandy. Can't remember the exact dreams before but I thought id woken up and gone to the hospital in one and I then realised I was still asleep and I can remember panicking and thinking omg I cant wake up, it really frightened me the first time. I was really panicking. Second time it was similar again cherry brandy and I managed to think its happened before so I was panicking but not as badly. Both times it was around a stressful time and id had a drink to help me sleep. Not touched cherry brandy since.
