Women who remarried after your husband's death while having children, how did your family relationships change?

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I'm not asking this to judge anyone. I'm genuinely curious because I've been thinking about how complicated this situation must be, especially when children and extended families are involved.
If a woman loses her husband and, years later, decides to remarry, I can understand her wanting to find happiness again. But I've always wondered how everything else works emotionally.

For example, what happens to the relationship with her late husband's parents and family? They were her family too, sometimes for many years. They might have a close bond with her and especially with their grandchildren. After she remarries, do they still feel like her family, or does the relationship naturally become more distant? Does she still visit them for holidays, birthdays, or family events, or does that gradually stop because she's now part of a different family?

Then there's the new marriage. Suddenly she has a new husband, new in-laws, maybe even stepchildren. That seems like such a huge change. How do women balance honoring the life they had before while building a completely new one? Do you ever feel like you're caught between two families?

I'm also really curious about the children. Were they involved in the decision, or were they simply told after everything was decided? If the mother changes her surname after remarriage, does that ever feel strange when her children still have their late father's surname? Has that ever created awkward situations or emotional challenges for anyone?

And how do new in-laws usually treat the children? They're not biologically related, and the kids never chose this new family. Do grandparents on the new husband's side usually accept them as their own, or does it vary a lot from family to family? What has your experience been like?

I'd especially love to hear from women who have actually been through this, or from adult children who experienced their mother remarrying after losing a spouse. I'm less interested in opinions from people imagining the situation and more interested in real experiences. I feel like this is one of those life situations that's much more emotionally complex than it appears from the outside.

My kids were adult when I got a new DP after widowhood. . No issues, no problems. 🤷‍♀️

I was the child in this situation. My late father's family basically dropped us, after my mother got a divorce we saw them occasionally. I wasn't interested too little too late.

Saw step father ruin the business my father built up and then run off with his pregnant girlfriend to the house he'd bought with money he siphoned off from the business.

Basically my mother rushed into a very ill advised relationship. We weren't asked what we thought about it.

Can work really well, but depends so much of the personalities and openness of the families. My friend lost her son when the grandkids kids were 3&5, cancer, dil remarried 5 years later to a man who she met at widowed and young, he didn’t have dc, they have one joint child, my friend treats all 3 children as her grandchildren and her dil is really close to her ex mil, the new husband is also close to my friend, she is very much part of their lives and is close to new husbands dad too, really hit it off (we think there’s a spark but she claims she’s too old for that sort of thing! The crucial thing is acceptance

We were teens when my mum was widowed, young adults when she got her ‘boyfriend’. He was also widowed, but his kids were a lot older. They were very sensitive about it now I think about it - I think my siblings and I would really have struggled if they had not been. As it was he made my mum happy and they were together until he died.

I was already long divorced but still on very good terms with my EX-H when he passed away aged 54.
He knew I was in a relationship and he knew our 2 DC's got along well with him.
His family apart from 1 family member would walk past us in the street (all of us, even their own family member after we got divorced) so there was nothing for my DC's to lose when I got remarried.
My now DH and my now D in-laws, treat my DC's and our DGC's as their own. I feel very lucky to have married into a wonderful family

Seems a bit cruel to farm for content like this, it could bring up difficult feelings and memories.

I know you want real life experiences but I urge you to use AI instead, or simply google.
