Anyone else found it a faff to change a bank account title from 'Master' to 'Mr'?

My son's Nationwide account was originally opened when he was 7, and he was given the title 'Master'. I vaguely remember them asking us whether we preferred Master or Mr - we thought Master would help to distinguish from DH, who has the same initial.

However, he's now 22, his account has morphed from a Junior account, to Student, to Graduate, but he still has the Master title. He's tried changing it online, over the phone, and by writing to them, but was told he has to take ID to a branch (easier said than done when he has a busy life). It has never been a priority for him,so hasn't been done, but now he has applied for a mortgage as "Mr". He got an email today to say he will need to change his account to Master before tomorrow's online appointment or they won't be able to proceed.

Aibu to think they could have offered to update it automatically when he turned 18? Why make it so hard?

Just go to a branch then. I’ve had to do it to go from Miss to Mrs, that’s not automatic either.

To change from Miss to Mrs you have to show a marriage certificate.

Not sure why he needs to show anything to move from Master to Mr - they know he's an adult from his date of birth.

I mean, it’s a bit silly, but he just needs to take ID into branch. I had a nightmare of a time trying to get my dc’s accounts opened because they also hold US citizenship, which causes a whole banking fiasco because lots of banks don’t like the US reporting requirements (even though we’re all British citizens). Computer kept saying no and telling me I needed to go to the embassy and jump through all sorts of hoops. I just went in with passports in hand and talked to a real person and it was sorted in 30 seconds.

Switch to a more modern bank account like Starling or Monza. Will be much easier in the long run. I haven’t been inside a bank for about 20 years. What a waste of time for him!

Because it’s an entirely optional title. So it’s a choice to change it. And you don’t have to show a marriage certificate you can just ask to be Mrs… it’s not a legal title it’s a choice
