Should I worry after my son fell into stagnant water?

Yesterday we were at at country park with some friends and my SW11 and two friends with their same age boys. This country park has streams and waterways lots of ducks/swans. No swimming but seen kids paddling etc. My DS and friends go paddling in clearish water less than knee high in a stream/pond that used to flow but in his heat has dried up. Being silly they went deeper until lost their footing and fell. My DS went up to his shoulders the others went fully under v murky brown water. My DS face got splashed from their submerge. Took them a good 20mins to get out due to mud etc but they did and I wiped DS down with some baby wipes but it was another 2hours til he got home and showered off. I blame myself for even letting him paddle. My husband has been so rightly cross with me about stagnant water diseases etc I just feel sick to my stomach. My DS had some scratches too so now I'm looking into all sorts of horrible nasty diseases and panicking. What can I do? Should I take him to hospital? I know I'm looking at upset stomach, infected scratches but what else? I get a bit spiralling at things like this and haven't slept or eaten since yesterday lunchtime out of stress and worry.

Is he ill?

Might get a tummy bug or an ear or eye infection but I doubt anything to genuinely worry about

meh i think the worst thing here is your husband getting so cross about kids doing typical kid things, and getting into mud/water .... yeah stagnant water isn't the greatest, but we're not living in a hotbed of malaria .... DH needs to chill !

I would normally agree but he worked in telecomms and was talking about some sort of disease from stagnant water that can be super dangerous

I don't understand how it took them 20 minutes to get out. They must have really waded in too far. Does your son have good water safety skills?

It's too late now, but I would have taken them to the loos and properly washed them down, not just wiped with baby wipes and then waited until getting home.

You don't need to take him to hospital, just keep an eye on him for infections and tummy troubles. Yes, you can get serious things from stagnant water, but he will most likely be OK.

Jeez your husband is crazy. Why is it YOUR fault? Accidents happen.

I live near a similar area and have fallen in myself trying to reach things! It's a bit gross but you'll know if anything sinister happens because you'll have infected skin or stomach issues. Chances are that he will be fine - local kids here are throwing themselves into murky water all the time.

Did the water smell or have blue/green algae?

What would you expect a doctor to do then, what would they be treating? If he didn't swallow any water then a stomach bug is unlikely, just keep an eye on his scratches for any sign of infection.

Was your husband talking about Legionnaires disease?

Take husband to hospital instead. Leave him there. Cross hubby shit is not ok, its 2026.

Yes probably about 50m the water was pretty shallow and we followed them.on the banks but went from knee height to v deep very quickly. They had to go back the way they came to get out so about 20mins. Unfortunately no toilets nearby so just wipes. We were about and hour from car and another hour ISH to get home. Like I said just worried about any nasty things I should be aware of

Not sure like I said I'm a worrier anyway and do tend to go straight to worst case scenario. He didn't swallow but got water splash to face.
Something to do with wild animals? Rats/cattle.

If he doesn't seem unwell then he's fine. Kids fall into grotty water and mud etc all the time. We used to go in the dirty canal every week as kids! Not saying that's a good thing but people occasionally got ear infections or bellyaches but nothing more.

It's very unlikely anything awful happened to him if he has no symptoms.

Can't say I noticed a smelly and no blue green algae as far as I could see but definitely brown where they fell. Should I worry about algae

How does working in Telecomms make you an expert in waterborne pathogens?
Sounds like the kids had fun, like dogs they should be getting mucky and your Husband is being ridiculous
Keep and eye on your son but if he seems fine then just forget the whole thing and maybe work on your anxiety

Yes, you were bloody daft letting young kids play in a riverbed. I’d have been more concerned about drowning as presumably you actually couldn’t see how deep it was further out and the fact he slid under to his shoulders suggests it was pretty deep. What were you thinking??

I had a really bad algae bloom in my pool recently (very green water - couldn't see the bottom) and I went in numerous times as part of the clean up, I just kept my head out of the water. He didn't put his head under water or swallow anything so I'm sure he'll be fine. These things happen.
