Where should we live short term?

We are selling our house and moving abroad, however we need around 6 months in the UK for work reasons before we go. Ive not rented for over 20 years and am pretty out of touch. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs.

We need to be within an hour of one of the ports, eg Plymouth, Portsmouth, Dover, Folkstone, as I have to drive to France, Germany and Spain regularly for work.

I have no idea where to start. Ive never visited any of these areas, I've no idea how much this will cost, no idea how we find somewhere that allows pets. Do we do airbandb for this length of time?

We are paying 2k for mortgage at the moment, but we will need to start paying for our property abroad about halfway through so I don't want to pay loads.

We need a small garden for the dogs, one bedroom is fine as long as I can work from a kitchen table. I'd like to be able to walk the dogs alone so fairly safe.

Happy for rural, town, city, as long as I can get to mainland Europe for work. Work in the UK is home based. We currently live outside of Newcastle.

Can anyone offer any advice?

We’ll be in a similar boat next year. I think with the rental reforms it’s now very difficult to rent somewhere for 6 months so from what I understand, you’re (and we’re) likely to be stuck with a series of Air BNBs. I’d put the majority of your belongings into storage to make everything easier.
