Amoxicillin taste

DC has ear infection and now has to take banana flavoured amoxicillin. My god you’d think I’m asking her to eat razor blades. please give me all your tips the more unhinged the better. I really don’t want to have to pin her down. I’ve tried all the usual stuff. She’s 9.

Also how bad is it if she isn’t able to finish all 7 days because I’m losing the plot here.

She really needs to take as many of the doses as possible.

Banana amoxicillin is vile. I think I'd prefer razorblades tbh!

Bribery is the only way i've gotten my son to take it. Chocolate, sweets, toys you name it, I've bribed with it. What matters is they take medicine.

In my experience nothing masks the taste.

Have you tried the "needing to be a big girl" angle? What's something she really really wants/likes? Ideally something thats an instant reward for each dose and then one for the completion of the course.

Mix it into a teaspoon of Nutella. That’s a strong flavour and should mask it.

I remember this stuff coming in thick square plastic bottles when I was a child in the late 70s-early 80s. I can still taste it. Yuck!!

But yes, she has to complete the course.

At 9 she is old enough to understand why she has to take it.

You can ask her what she wants afterwards to take the taste away but otherwise, it's down the hatch asap.

Teaching a 9 year old to swallow tablets cuts down on the stress and bad taste associated with liquid medications.

This, i had to teach one of mine to.swallow pills at this age because she had constant infections and was heaving (sorry) at liquid antibiotics, op see if the pharmacy will re administer into capsules, your dd isn't a little girl she needs to take her antibiotics.

Tablets are the way forward!

Tablets not an option. My 13 yo won’t even take tablets. Gags and makes an almighty fuss.

So the trick that worked was ice pop first, medicine with added water so less strong and in a cup so she can’t see the awful gag inducing colour. And a £1 bribe per dose.

She needs to take all the doses or there’s a strong chance the infection comes back worse.
Can you mix it with honey or maple syrup?
