Guilt and Embarrassment (lighthearted)

Three years ago we went on holiday with friends and got into playing a card game in the evenings. I'm not very good at the game so I cheated and won. There was nothing at stake except pride but for some reason I feel really guilty about it, even years later.
I also know that one of the friends knew i had cheated (because of something he said) and so i feel embarrassed that he knows i did it - it's so tragic for a forty-something woman to cheat in a card game! I bet nobody from the holiday but me remembers it but it's one of those things that plays in my mind during quiet moments.

What silly thing are you riddled with guilt and/or embarrassment over?

Oh come on, it was a game and it was a silly thing. You're acting like she's committed a crime, do you want the op to commit self flagellation?

🙄🙄🙄🙄 There is always one.

No but the fact she doesn't see cheating at cards as being dishonest then I think she is seriously lacking in a moral code. Being dishonest is not silly. It's serious

That may be what you typed, but what I read was "My family are also very dramatic" 😂

No my family and most peoole we know are not in the least dramatic. But we are honest.

we’ve all been there! Don’t worry about it. But I also have moments I think back to and cringe 😬

No we haven't!

But she does as she feels guilty about it. You do like to hammer a point home.

I'd take a look at why you feel the need to put someone down repeatedly over something they said they already feel bad about. I'd worry about that more than cheating in a silly card game years ago.

I'm not repeatedly putting somebody down.
I'm replying to the other posters who are taking issue with what I posted and who also think that cheating is just a silly bit of fun

Given the attitude of pp on this thread no wonder we have got to the stage of holding events like the Enhanced Games.

As our moral guide, how would you recommend I go about making amends @Gladitsraining ? Is there any hope of redemption for such a dreadful sinner as me, or must I bear this burden of shame for all eternity?

It’s too much sin for this lifetime. You will only be able to atone in your next lifetime.

I put cheating on a par with lying. It would never even cross my mind to cheat . There is no shame in being beaten. There is every shame in cheating. I'm sorry but i don't count cheating at cards as a silly thing at all.

Are you alright?

I'm fine. Thanks for asking.
How are you?

Well you've been repeatedly telling OP she's dishonest and asserting that she has some major character flaw.

So I'm going to use the information you've given us about you and tell you you're judgemental, rude and dramatic. I'm sure many on the thread will agree. There's no point arguing back because (like you) I've appointed myself the thread arbiter of How To Behave.

Not very nice, is it?

It's really not that deep.
Why are you so angry that a person you don't know cheated at a card game? She hasn't admitted to murdering kittens, just doing something a bit daft that affected no-one!

TheRealGoose · 28/07/2026 17:35

I’ve a friend who did this, I couldn’t understand it, it was a game for fun, why was winning so important to her that she cheated and lied to her friends . It also meant the game wasn’t that much fun, as no one had a chance and we all knew, went along with it, we made out it was fun, but after we were all saying how she’d cheated and were rather bemused by it, she did admit it eventually.

the question I guess is why is winning so important thay cheating your friends at a fun game is something you’d do.

Yes, people who like custard never cheat. Strange, but true.
