Traffic this weekend to Cornwall

My now adult child is going to visit family in South Cornwall and needs to arrive by Saturday pm. As they can’t travel on Thursday I was suggesting they go first thing Friday or Friday night. It’s around 6 hours /300 miles from here and we normally leave at 6am Friday and drive non- stop.

this is their first solo drive and im concerned about them driving at night - small car unknown reliability but serviced this month for this reason.

But it’s Boardmasters this weekend! Aghhh. When is the best time to travel? They are supposed to come home Monday but are stopping at Bristol so would be interested in this too.

Leaving I wouldn't worry too much about.

Coming down - avoid being on the M5 south of Bristol after about 1pm.

When you say South Cornwall, do you mean SE or SW? For SE they'll come off the M5 and join the A38 instead of the A30 which will avoid the Boardmasters traffic.

They are going to sw Cornwall normally a38 to Fraddon.

There's a good chance of it being pretty bad, and I would bet on them being stuck in a traffic jam at some point. I guess the trick is just to be prepared for delays, have plenty of fuel - for them and the car.

The Waze app is useful for scenic diversions

I’d try for EARLY Friday. Saturday is changeover day and it could be horrible.

Most hotels etc don’t check in until 3 or 4 so get there way before.

I would set off before 6am Friday if possible. Maybe even as soon as it’s light. M5 is usually worse northbound earlier on a Friday and tends to build up southbound around Bristol by mid morning. Assuming you mean M5 and not A303. If this early isn’t possible then leave it until the evening.

As for Mon, again I’d leave first thing. Mondays seem to be pretty bad lately too so either first thing or the evening is better.

It makes such a difference breaking the journey at Bristol. Can they do that on the way down?

Boardmasters is 5th to 9th August so not this weekend coming.

When we go Cornwall we always set off 3 or 4am and have a clear drive. Always aim to be past Bristol before rush hour.
