Hi all - a friend is running an event in Sydney next month, for the first time.

The age group is people in their 40s and 50s.

They’ve run it in the UK for a few years, and provide sweets along the lines of Love Hearts, Refreshers, Fruit Salads, Palma Violets (🤢🤢!!!) etc.

they want to get something similar for the Sydney version but don’t know what might go down well as nostalgia there - any suggestions?

Allen's snakes alive and pineapples, Darryl lea bullets, musk sticks(acquired taste) cheekies, black cats and obviously jaffas.

And Masters spearmint milk for the drinks! I loved that as a kid, can't get it in the UK, or any syrup or powder to make my own, unless anyone knows differently?

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 26/07/2026 22:15

Oh spearmint leaves! Forgot them.

wandawaves · 26/07/2026 22:45

Fantales, Redskins, Sherbies.
Sherbet lollipops, UFOs.

Fanta les, Minties (it’s moments like these you need ….), musk sticks, freckles, Jaffas, spearmint leaves, Caramello koalas.
Tell your friend to look at the Australian Women’s Weekly classic Birthday Cake book (the one with a cake train on the front) and basically anything used in there.

Minties, Kool Fruits & Kool Mints, sherbet straws plus the already mentioned Fantales, Redskins & Milkos, & Jaffas.

Also Sunny Boy ice ‘blocks’

Disclaimer - lived in UK for years so can’t be sure if they are still available or considered retro but that’s what we were eating in the 80’s.

Also Lifesavers

in the spirit of the above poster, ‘get a hole lot more….’

Excellent tip from PP re the WW Birthday Cake cookbook. It has all the old sweets. And totally agree that Fantales and Minties are the best!

Musk sticks. From Coles confectionery section - bottom shelf. Bananas. Freckles. Butter menthol whether or not you have a cold. Aniseed rings.

Minties and Fantails - your teeth stick together with both of them. That might not be fun while running. Jaffas are safer.

DD is doing the City to Surf over my way. I will be standing on the side of the road at one point. I never thought of giving her a lolly or two.

Fantales have not been made since 2023.
