I’m feeling a bit disillusioned and lost with my life at the moment. I’m 53, single (would like to meet someone), kids grown up now & although they live with me are pretty independent.I have a small circle of good girlfriends and we meet up maybe once a month, but otherwise my life consists of work (in a job which is ok but I certainly don’t love), housework & caring for my elderly mother. (She doesn’t live with me but my days off are spent checking in on her, taking her shopping, to appointments etc). I don’t begrudge doing that - she helped me out massively with my boys when they were little. It’s just my life is so boring! I’ve tried online dating & had few dates but generally found it all fairly dire. I’d really like to make new friends/get some hobbies. Where do I start?

Well what do you like? Are you into films, arts and crafts, history? Gym? Walking club? Volunteeering? My cousin loves horses and volunteers for ‘Riding for the disabled’, a friend lives theatre and volunteers at the local children’s theatre.

It sounds like you have lots of obligations and probably not much free time, but it's important to find a balance and to do stuff for yourself. What do you love? I know it's clichéd but joining groups or volunteering are always good ideas. Someone once said to me that all you need for a happy life is something to do, someone to love and something to look forward to. It sounds like you need more of the third. Could you plan a trip or fun project?

I have booked a solo holiday this summer - first time I’ve done this. Bit nervous but excited too. I love live music so maybe I’ll try going along to some events on my own. I don’t get much free time but I do need to do something else rather than just get home from work & flop in front of the TV with a glass of wine. Volunteering sounds interesting … I shall do some research. Thank you !
