Does this sound like ADHD?

I know there are many things that could be symptoms of something without necessarily meaning you have a diagnosis, but I've always been curious about this.

I struggle to finish books, I've got two books I started in the last few months, I'm about a quarter into both of them and keep meaning to read more but just keep forgetting/doing other things.

I struggle to sit and watch a film for a few hours, even if I enjoy it, those 3-hour films at the cinema are tough. I have to go to the toilet for something to do.

At home I can't watch TV without also scrolling on my phone. It annoyed previous partners even though I wasn't talking over it or affecting them watching it.

Struggle to sit in an office all day (which is why I've left office roles now] I'd get very restless, end up needing the toilet every hour and leave as soon as I could.

If someone gives me verbal instructions or directions they go completely over my head, I need it written down.

Sometimes find myself browsing on Indeed just to see 'what's out there' job-wise even if my job is fine.
Just always felt a bit 'different' and that something was wrong with me. I'm mid 30s, has anyone else had this or had a diagnosis from this?

There is some serious masking during childhood especially for girls ( assuming you’re female @TheElegantFairy )

I masked my own for years so that I am perfect and don’t cause a fuss! best grades , best everything all the way to master degrees and highly paid jobs

so yes it is complex and absolutely very difficult to pinpoint this to just “smart phones” usage

@TheElegantFairy you can easily go for referral , my own was super quick I was diagnosed and started medication within weeks … worth pursuing

Where do you live that getting a diagnosis is so quick? My sister has been waiting for 7 years so far.

Did she go via Right to Choose?

Funnily enough we were talking about this the other day. She's worried that they won't provide medication titration. She does keep meaning to look into it, but keeps forgetting because she's a disorganised mess 🤣

There is no masking like that in adhd. Thats why they say 2 settings. Ie school snf home.
However certainly doesnt mean school always see the exact issues. But that does seem to happen more with girls who sre also autistic. Or as in our case the schools arent great. At the moment also so many general behaviour issues that a girl not paying attention or never getting work done is ignored.

I’m convinced everyone seems to have adhd these days. You probably have a short attention span especially with the scrolling on phone, it changes your brain chemistry.

ofc there is masking and females know how to do this well!

struggling inside but never asking for help, avoiding certain settings cause we can’t cope, unregulated at school but not saying a word, staying till 4am to study as struggling to make sense in the day !

continuous masking from reception all the way to 40s-50s…

this is adhd, all these complex challenges that we used to think it’s just us! Hence diagnosis and meds were life savers for us

Before smart phones existed I could do most of those things (though it did take me 6 years to complete a 4 year degree). Since smart phones I give my full focus to nothing and have read one book in thr last 5 years. Every teenager I know is just like this.

It's terrifying isn't it? And this is clearly why so many more children than in the previous 15 years or so are currently being assessed for ADHD and so many have speech delays. .
