For those with dc taking 11+, are you taking a summer break?

i have a dc who will be sitting the 11+ in September. I do have an older dc who is at the neighbouring grammar (one is boys other girls school).

i have a few friends who have mentioned how they’re busy with tutoring/teaching during the summer because the dc will be sitting the 11+, and I'm beginning to wonder whether I’m the only one who hasn’t timetabled work during the holidays?

We will be away for about 3 and half weeks (and hopefully have a nice time).

So my question is, if you have dc who will be sitting the exam, are they just studying during the summer holidays?

side note in case anyone is wondering, with oldest dc we decided very last minute (close to closing date) on trying the 11+ (felt smoother and less pressure 😂)

We only tutor every other week so we will be carrying on except for our holiday week, much to Ds’s disgust

That sounds reasonable, I’ve just come across people who
will be doing quite a bit of work with their dc; putting holidays on hold and so on.

Mine sat it last year. We didn't take work on holiday but when we were hanging around at home we did about 2 hours a day for maybe 3 days a week.

We weren't mad on the term time work either though, and hour a week with the tutor and an hour on a Sunday. We upped the game in September until the exams were over but only to a tutor session plus maybe 2.5 hrs a week.

My 10 year old daughter isn’t doing the 11+ but her friend is.
The local mixed grammar come to our primary to run sessions twice a week after school and they have a theory that if you stop you loose the motivation!!!!
They are running tutoring sessions they’re charging for 2 afternoons a week which is a pain when people are at work!

they run on a Tuesday and a Thursday (so as to allow families to have weekends away - nice of them to give everyone permission!!)

to my mind - kids can either answer the questions and get it or they can’t. But there is no way it would be governing my summer not a chance!

We are trying to do about 30 minutes a day over the holidays, but it’s been hard whilst away with cousins (who don’t have any work to do!). They’re doing some islands on atom and a page or so of CGP. Once we’re not ‘away’ and just back at home we will up it a bit. Need to do more practise papers which is really tricky when in a holiday house with extended family!

Dd did it last summer. She didnt do any work when we were actually away, but did a past paper almost every day we were at home. She lost speed and accuracy surprisingly fast while we were away and definitely needed the practice just to keep on top of it ahead of the test.

@Besidemyselfwithworrythat’s how I feel. I don’t think I could change plans, or expect work from dc during the holidays, especially when cousins/friends are having a break.

dc will be sitting the FSCE 11+ and I think that’s made it trickier as I can’t even find past papers to get some ‘work’ done…

Exam practice doesn't have to be whole days working, just ask her to do a paper or part of a paper after breakfast and before going out or once you get home in the afternoon.

Whilst at home we are doing about 45 mins 5/6 days a week, plus reading. It's super competitive here, many are doing way more (allegedly!). There is a holiday club 10-4 for 3 WEEKS doing prep!

We have a week's holiday and 1.5 weeks staying with family. I suspect we will pause on holiday and do some (but less) whilst with family. DD isn't loving it, but is very motivated to get into the school, so tolerating it ok. It is mainly DD working though, I don't sit with her the whole time.

Yes it’s very regimented and kids at the grammar also have summer schools for music, drama, science, sports etc…..

I’m not sure if there is an expectation you pay for and attend these but I wouldn’t be any this pressure
