A tangled one

This might be confusing and hard to follow but I’ll give it my best because I have NO ONE I can talk to about this IRL

a lot of characters in this story.
me, my sister (sissy), my older brother (bro) are pretty close. Bro was married to Kelly for 15yrs, I believe they were the loves of each others lives but for a few reasons they split about 10yrs ago. Now are both with other people.
kelly and sissy we’re best friends while Kelly and bro were married, still v friendly but not as close.
me, sissy, kelly and three other women are in a friendship group. The three others are all sisters and v close. One of these sisters (Laura) is married to Dave, who happens to be my cousin, and has been for nearly 20yrs. All very enmeshed.

I was recently told by a family member that Kelly and Dave had a fling shortly after Kelly and bro split up. Bro has no idea - it would break his heart as he is still VERY close to Dave (his cousin). The sisters have no idea also that Kelly slept with one of their husbands. Laura would be crushed - her husband and one of her best friends.
I believe it was a one off, but I don’t have the full details (I don’t want them)

im finding it very hard to be okay with this. Kelly is still in the group chats being super friendly to Laura and the sisters.
im mad I was told actually!

anyway, one of the sisters is having a big bday bash next month and has invited everyone. This will be the first time I have seen Kelly since the revelation, she doesn’t know I know. I would normally tell my sister these things but if I told her she would tell everyone and I just feel like it would hurt so many people. Especially my brother and Laura. Who don’t deserve it.

don’t know what I want from posting this. I just feel stuck because I can’t tell anyone in real life and I am soooo disappointed and disgusted in Kelly that she could do that to my brother and one of her best friends. And equally toward Dave who could do that to his wife and his cousin. YUCK

I might just not go to the bday because I don’t think I can smile in their faces while knowing this poison. UGH

That’s knowledge that I bet you wish you didn’t know about. If I were you, I think I’d keep it to myself as it’s a Pandora’s box. Once opened, absolute hell will break loose. It happened but it’s not happening anymore. It sounds like it was a clumsy thing that shouldn’t have happened but it did. Give it time and you’ll eventually forget about it. The question is, will the other family member spill the beans?

What an awful position to be put in, especially as you never asked to know any of this. Personally, I'd be annoyed with the person who told you more than anyone else, because they've handed you a secret that isn't really yours to do anything with. If this happened years ago, everyone involved has moved on, and you don't actually know the full story, I'd be very cautious about letting it change how you treat Kelly. Dave bears exactly the same responsibility too. I wouldn't skip the birthday over it. I'd go, be polite and try to remember that this isn't your burden to carry. Unless someone directly involved decides to tell the truth, I don't think there's much to be gained by letting it consume you.

Are you 100% certain it's true?

pictoosh · 24/07/2026 08:10

It was years ago?

I would be annoyed at the person who told you and wonder what heir game is trying to stir up trouble so long after the event.

I think you should forget you know and carry on as normal, no good can come of dredging up the past all these years later when everyone is happy.
