Can I ask for advice with a UTI please

So I got a UTI out the blue on Sunday, got antibiotics on Sunday evening, starting with a T. Took the course, finished it this morning. Felt fine all during the day peeing and first thing this morning, but for the last few hours ive got stinging again when I pee. And im drinking lots of water. Why has the stinging sensation came back, I thought the antibiotics had cleared it as I was fine this morning lunchtime.
I dont have experience of this so unsure if this is normal.
Any advice appreciated.

You might need a different type of antibiotic depending on the type of infection you have.

You could try cystopurtin until you can get back to doctor.

I’d say it’s possibly not the right sort of antibiotics. I used to get UTI’s all the time and sometimes the first lot of antibiotics would be okay while i was taking them but it’d come right back once they stopped.
I had them so often that eventually the GP would give me the stronger antibiotics the first time. I kept a supply at home so I could start them straight away, this was after a few years of suffering though.
Drinking loads helps, warm bath, D-mannose tablets also help. Hope you get it cleared up quick, it can be utterly miserable. Don't forget you can take painkillers for it too.

Is that something I could buy in Boots? I read on here D Manoose is worth trying too.

Yes chemist or probably on amazon pretty much everything is!

D-mannose can help with prevention if taken daily, but I don't think it would be enough to treat an established infection. Cystopurin sachets are available from pharmacies, and sometimes supermarkets - they will help with the pain, but you need to ring your GP in the morning and see if they'll write up a prescription for stronger antibiotics for you. Sympathy - it's miserable 😢

JacknDiane · 22/07/2026 19:46

I read you can get urine tests over the counter in superdrug, has anyone tried that? I dont know what happens if it finds you do have an infection still, im guessing on a dr could prescribe medication.
Trouble is Dr's appointments are like hens teeth here.

Hi, OP.

Please go. Back to your GP. Things like D manoose are preventives. If you already have an infection it won't help. I would also up your fluids and drinking cranberry juice. I've had almost 25yrs of uti history so l'm a old pro!!

JacknDiane · 22/07/2026 20:30

Thanks, I'll phone first thing but they are doing emergency appointments only just now and I dont know if this is classed as an emergency. Hopefully the gp just prescribes another antibiotic but even speaking to a gp will be practically impossible.

Yes @JacknDiane you can buy it over the counter.

I managed to get an antibiotic from a pharmacist when I had a UTI recently and couldn’t see a GP.

Ineedanaptoo · 22/07/2026 21:34

UTI’s are horrible, sorry you’ve got one OP. I’m recovering from a UTI that became a kidney infection which was tricky to treat due to antibiotic allergies. Go back to your GP and ask them to send off a urine sample to grow cultures for which antibiotics will work. Dip tests are only 50-65% accurate. Sometimes you need a longer dose then 5-7 days and sometimes they are resistant to certain antibiotics. Drink way more than you think, minimum 2 litres of water plus other drinks. Pomegranate juice has some of the same anti-inflammatory properties as cranberry juice but a lot less sugar which can make UTIs last longer.

OneDreamyAquaEagle · 22/07/2026 21:34

Pharmacy First - a UTI is one of the things covered, which means you don't need a GP appt, you can just ask your chemist. You have to be under 65 and not have had a UTI within the previous 6 months. If you can't fill in an online request tomorrow, you can always call NHS111 (OOH GP service) who should be able to prescribe for you to pick up tomorrow. Alternatively, you may need to take in a sample to your GP, however they should be able to just represcribe without you needing an appt.

Edited for clarity

Not sure for the rest of the UK but in Scotland pharmacies can prescribe antibiotics for UTI.

Octavia64 · 22/07/2026 21:41

Pharmacies can treat what they call simple UTIs. In practice that seemed to mean asking if I’d had one before.

d mannose helps prevent but won’t treat. The more fluid you can get through the better so drink drink drink!

VictorianChic · 22/07/2026 21:41

I found that lemon barley water helped with the burning. It’s obviously not a cure but in the meantime it changes the ph of urine (alkalising) which makes it sting less. Make it as concentrated as you can bear…drink it neat even.

Usernamepleasework · 22/07/2026 21:41

my UTI’s got so bad I now take a small does antibiotic every night to prevent. I know ur pain one of the things that help me with them was sitting on a hot water bottle.

D-manoose helps prevent infections. But once you've got one, it isn't going to help.

JacknDiane · 22/07/2026 22:18

Thanks all. I took ibuprofen earlier which helped. I got the antibiotics from a pharmacist and she said if I still have symptoms when they are finished to see my gp. I just hope i get an appointment.

Hiya from experience have a further course. Gp’s sometimes prescribe a 3 day course and in reality you sometimes need 7-10 days.

you can also call in and ask for a specimen pot to send off so that they can identify you are on the correct antibiotic

Mudslideal · 23/07/2026 19:36
