Croatia recommendations for a mid-priced couples holiday in May

Thinking of booking a couples holiday for next year once DD17 has moved out to live with her GF. DH suggested Croatia & I seem to remember hearing that it’s beautiful, unspoilt & reasonably cheap. Will possibly be in May as it’s our Silver Wedding. Definitely don’t want AI or full board. Probably B & B in a smallish hotel. 7 or 10 days ideally. We’re not wild party folks but would like somewhere lively in the evenings. I love a good pool! Not sure of budget but I guess mid price, flying from Exeter or Bristol although could go from B’ham as we could stay with family in Warwickshire.

Oh! I thought I would get at least a few replies on this. Has nobody been to Croatia then?

Croatia is lovely, but I don't have any up-to-date info. I've only ever stayed in one half-board hotel in Pula - that was a few years ago.

There's a company called Regent Travel which specialises in holidays in the Balkans, but they won't be cheap - you might be better using one of the major companies. ISTR that we used Tui. (I've used Regent Travel for elsewhere in the Balkans.)

We have been to Croatia twice ..1st stayed in cavtat near Dubrovnik after our daughter's GCSEs ..cavtat beautiful , went into Dubrovnik either by bus or boat ..walked the walls , photography exhibition and game of thrones tours ..I believe Dubrovnik is now a lot busier particularly when a cruise ship is in port.

Went a couple of years ago as a couple and stayed at brac island in may..flew to split and got a ferry to very short ferry ride to brac . Island was beautiful not busy when we went . Lovely buildings , remote monastery, golden horn beach and short ferry ride right into the centre if split. Other islands to visit nearby like hvar

Both were booked as packages with her 2. Love Croatia probably my favourite country and going back for my birthday next big birthday.

Definitely recommend Cavtat, going for a 2nd time in September. This will be our 4th trip to Croatia, just love it there. Cavtat is quiet and beautiful but Dubrovnik is easily accessible. Also you can do day trips to Montenegro or Bosnia from Cavtat, long days though but worth it. So a good relaxing base with the advantages of accessibility to other places and only 15 minutes from the airport.
Have a look at facebook groups as there is loads of info about the place, trips, hotels etc.

Only ever been on a small yacht cruise with Riviera Travel, fabulous holiday but expensive.
I would say prices have increased now it uses the €

DH and I went on a four day couples break last year - flew from Bristol to Split. Lovely city for a few days and the option of booking day trips a little further afield if you wanted to do some walking or sightseeing elsewhere. We loved it.

We went to Croatia this summer and stayed just south of Dubrovnik. It was lovely and I would recommend but it is certainly not cheap - eating out cost the same as home.

I visited Togir near Split a few years ago and going back for our honeymoon next year. Very affordable, close to the airport, amazing beaches and history.

Just back from Cavtat. Lovely place. Would recommend. Quiet, but things to do, easy boat trips, we hired a car so had a bit of freedom.

PersephoneParlormaid · 23/07/2026 06:51

Cavtat is gorgeous.

hahabahbag · 23/07/2026 06:55

It’s lovely but wouldn’t describe it as reasonably cheap, it’s a similar pricing to much of Europe. As we were on a cruise I can’t recommend a hotel but it was beautiful

Countmeout · 23/07/2026 07:25

Some of my family have just been. Did not find it cheap. Quite the opposite.

PorridgeFace · 23/07/2026 07:32

I went to Split a few years ago, enjoyed it. Everyone recommended Brac so we got a boat there, beautiful but I found it quite dull personally.

We stayed in air BnB and it was wonderful.

Lots of islands in easy reach for the day.

Must go back one day

I'd say that prices in Montenegro are fairly reasonable. Might be worth the OP's while looking at holidays there?

Bizarrely, the one expensive item was ice cream. I'm a crone, so travelled with Saga two years ago. It was AI, but ice cream was only available at lunchtime.

I did have some meals outside the hotel and found them to be cheaper than the UK.

I know that the OP only asked about Croatia, but thought I'd mention Montenegro as another option.

Croatia is beautiful!

We flew from Birmingham to Zadar last August, cheap flights with Ryanair 😬 - who I normally avoid but it was fine!

Stayed just out of the harbour, found a cheap b&b with a pool on booking.com - it was lovely.
lots on Airbnb too

take a boat/snorkeling trip around the islands - a fantastic day out and really reasonable too!

Could you post the name of your B & B please? Did you book independently?

Another recommendation for Cavtat, it's beautiful. Get the boat to Dubrovnik for the day and other boats trips available.

I found eating/drinking out cheaper than home but I'm used to London prices so prob a bit different. We stayed in Hotel Croatia which has a nice pool. Hotel Cavtat also looked lovely.
