Could this be caffeine overdose after drinking too strong coffee?

Bought a coffee on the weekend and thought it was strong. Didn't think too much of it but couple minutes later my heart started racing really fast and felt very light headed and teeth chatting and hands trembling, thought I was having a stroke. Couple of hours after and since have been fine but I can't think of anything else apart from the coffee ? Think the panic set in which made it worse but for a few minutes I thought I was on way out

Ask google and please share the answer!

Do you drink coffee regularly anyway? Seems a strong reaction.

Yes could absolutely be caffeine. As long as your symptoms settled and haven't come back it doesn't sound like anything to worry about!

Thank you both. Yes I usually have 1 coffee a day but not from this place, it has actually put me off coffee and have told myself to quit, I'm 90% it was that as been fine since but it does seem excessive symptoms for a coffee

I don't have strong coffee after a couple of similar reactions, not as bad as what you've had though.

I tried looking at the caffeine content of things and it just seems easier to stick with instant at home and I never buy coffee out. (To be fair, I never did that much anyway because I cannot bring myself to spend that money). So I don't feel like I'm missing out.

Only exception is I've got one friend who has a coffee machine and it's got those pods that you put in and one is described as "mild" so I've tried that one and it seems to be okay.

Caffeine is a stimulant drug. It could absolutely have this effect. It was maybe much stronger than you are used to? Drunk on an empty stomach, less milk, quickly etc? I think if you are feeling worried there would be no harm in getting a check up from your GP to put your mind at rest

I drank too much coffee the other day (2 of my normal morning cups and then mid morning an iced coffee from a local place that does strong coffee). I started feeling very jittery and shaky and almost drunk. I stumbled a few times trying to walk in a straight line.

Yes, proper barista coffee does this to me, im really sensitive to it these days, peri menopause.
Decaff all the way now.

Minimeeny · 21/07/2026 23:19

Ive had a coffee overdose multiple times and its exactly like you describe. Im also prone to panic attacks which feel identical.

lechatdhenri · 21/07/2026 23:25

Coffee can definitely make you feel like that, but I thought it took about 15 minutes for the caffeine to kick in. If it was immediate then maybe it was a panic attack?

Capybarachocolate · 21/07/2026 23:47

I would have a medical check up to put your mind at rest.

Coffee does this to me. I only drink decaf but sometimes they give me caffeine by mistake and it makes my heart pound and hands shake and I feel really jumpy. Nasty stuff.
