Im a bad sleeper. Im not an insomniac as such but have great difficulty getting to sleep and then staying asleep. My mind is a racing mess for various reasons. Every blue moon i do sleep ok and last night was an example of that. I didn't eep a blink Wednesday night (let's not blame the football) had about 2hrs Thursday, maybe 5 Friday and 2 Saturday. Watched the Final last night and actually slept from 1am till 6am woke for an hour or so then fell back to sleep for around 4 hours and it was dreamy!:Anyone know what its called and 2hatvi possibly did to initiate it? Ive always slept badly since age 8 due to a childhood trauma. I long for normal sleep! No drink or drugs involved just an exhausted youngish nearlyish 50 year old! Any sleep tips as DH against me using Phenegan

That’sa really interesting article. Thanks for linking it.

Until Covid, I slept well. Covid destroyed my ability to sleep. I’m not a shift worker, but I have found that a good strategy to cope with my fatigue is to nap on my days off. And not necessarily an afternoon siesta, but a morning nap. So it’s almost like I’m splitting my night, albeit in daytime: sleep 4h, awake and active 2-3h, sleep 2h.

I’ve been afraid to go to bed early, even through I’m struggling to stay awake, because I know I’ll be awake at 2am and struggle to go back to sleep - and then have to go to work 6h later. Maybe I should try it, and get up and use the time when I wake in the small hours.

Food for thought.

This is me, but I find if I go to the loo when I wake in the night (even if I don't feel the need) then I do go back to sleep.

OP - try cutting out caffeine from lunchtime onwards.

how much caffeine do u take on a daily basis?

TheCurious0range · 21/07/2026 11:06

I used to sleep 8-10 hours every night until I had DC then became a light sleeper and it never switched off. What works for me and you might've tried these anyway, shower before bed, cool bedroom, pitch black, I use sleep pillow spray gruum and others are all fine, in winter I have twinings sleepy tea, but the thing that makes the biggest difference is magnesium I use the nutrition geeks ones, just one capsule when I get into bed to read, half an hour before I switch the lamp off. I get to sleep quicker and stay asleep longer. This was last night and we're on holiday in a hotel with lots of people coming and going at all hours

Hi Op, sorry if I've missed it.
But you don't seem to be HRT? This is magical for sleep.

The progesterone element made me sleep too deeply, but lots of women love it.

You’re a druggie because you take birth control?

Time to get himself to the doctors? ✂️

Then why doesn’t he go get the snip?

I’m sorry, but he’s an idiot.

I don't drink coffee but will have 4/5 cups of tea over the course of the day.

I don’t sleep much either op, for about the last 7 years when I went through a period of extreme stress and my sleep never recovered. I’ve tried it all and for consistent periods of time not just a month and given up.
i had a general anaesthetic yesterday and the last thing I remember saying before I was out was I wish someone could do that for me every night!
I’ve made my peace with the fact that I get about 4 hours of broken sleep a night but I am resting for the remaining time, just lying down with my eyes closed. I used to get up and read or watch tv or go for a walk or whatever but just figure now my body at
least deserves to rest so that’s what I do.

@DizziLizzy sleep disintegrates with the decline in oestrogen.

I can't emphasise how big a difference HRT made to my sleep. I went from waking up 5 times a night to wee, or just very light sleep...to sleeping for 7hrs a night very deeply.

If you do get HRT you also need vaginal oestrogen cream because this strengthens the walls of your vagina/bladder and stops you needing night time wees.
