North or South coast? The north can be quite cold in the autumn. Central areas don't in my opinion have much going for them unless you head to Dartmoor, which again could be cold.

I think I'd head to Torbay. Take in Brixham, Berry head and perhaps Coleton Fishacre and Dartmouth. Or Greenway and the steam railway if that's your thing. Berry Pomeroy Castle is fun if it's not raining too. Goodrington beach is popular with the locals. Torquay for a night out or a meal. We've stayed in inexpensive hotels when there so not much knowledge of cottages and lodges.

The last place I’d stay is Torbay!!!! From someone who lives in Devon!!!
Dawlish is pretty on the south coast. Dartmouth, Sheldon, Salcombe are all equally lovely Dartmoor is beautiful whatever the season.
Or north Devon is also lovely but a bit more remote travelling wise.
But Torbay would be the last place I’d bother with

I never intended this to start a civil war! Next you’ll be fighting over jam first, or cream!

Jam on top!

Dartmoor is beautiful in the autumn.

Coleton Fishacre and Greenway are beautiful National Trust properties and well worth visiting. I prefer East Devon- Exmouth/Sidmouth etc. The town centre in Exmouth looks a bit shabby imo, but the beach is excellent.
Tavistock is also nice if you want proximity to Dartmoor.
