Greasy haired teen DS

My DS's hair is absolutely disgustingly greasy at the moment. He showers daily (after a battle trying to implement this) but he doesn't wash his hair because he says shampoo stings his eyes. So I bought him some baby shampoo but he says it still stings a bit so isn't using it. After having a massive go at him yesterday, he says he washed it this morning but only the top of his hair is clean, the fringe/front bit still looks wet because it's so dirty and it's got bits of grass seed stuck in it due to a trip to the woods yesterday. Can anyone suggest any products or parenting techniques here? I'm at my wits end!

He probably needs to be told to make sure he lathers and washes all of his scalp when he shampoos, it sounds like he's just running his head under the shower.

Maybe tell him if he wouldn't go out with a crusty smelly arse, he shouldn't go out with a crusty smelly scalp either?

I'd send him back in and insist on washing his hair for him like a child until he starts doing it properly. It's funny how quickly the threat of embarrassment will motivate them to wash properly.

Is his Dad in the picture? Could he shower wearing swim shorts and show his Dad how he washes his hair? And his Dad could also wear swim shorts and show him how he washes his hair. He shouldn't be getting shampoo in his eyes.

Ds2 for some insane reason faces the shower head and washes his hair with his head tipped forward.I never taught him to do that. Now he is a very clean man but I only found out when we were at CenterParcs and in the open showers after coming out of the pool. He can see that no one else washes their hair this way. He also never complains about shampoo getting into his eyes.

Why doesn't he get a number 1 buzz cut @FruityFrog.

Also you can get a shampoo called Nilaqua that shampoos your hair and you just towel it dry . No rinses no shampoo in eyes .

Spray in, brush out.

He could also be using too much shampoo, contributing to getting it in his eyes. Boys can be rough with grabbing something and dumping a cups worth out!

Family members can see each other naked.

@Needmorelego neither of my sons would have been comfortable getting naked in front of their Dad as a teen or seeing their Dad naked. We all used to go swimming as a family so I know what Dh tells me about how they were in the open changing rooms with him.

Ok that's fine if they feel uncomfortable.
I just find the Mumsnet attitude to being naked among close family members when it's for helping with personal care/hygiene a bit puritan sometimes.

It's ok to use occasionally but not something you should use to replace washing.

I'd help him wash it once a week over the sink or bath, and keep encouraging him to practice in the shower in between.

I used it a lot as a teen and I did like the smell (classic Batiste brand).
(We also used talc back in my day....as recommended by Jackie magazine 🙂)

I hate getting water on my face, get him to wash it over the bath
wash it twice and rinse very well. It’s not cheap but bumble and bumble Sunday shampoo will strip anything out of hair

Update: HE WASHED IT! Just need to keep it up now 😃

Tell him in future to wash his hair with his back to the shower and raise his head so it doesn't end up in his eyes. I had very long hair and managed not to get it in my eyes this way!

I am a 42 yr old woman but I have oily skin and can get greasy hair despite washing it frequently. I worked out that if I use a shampoo for a while that is opaque, it seems to build up and it’s harder to get a proper lather going because of the oil and the build up. I have to use a shampoo that is transparent, and I use a clarifying shampoo every so often to keep the oiliness in check.

Tell him you're not meant to put it in your eyes?! You rub a reasonable not excessive amount onto your head and through hair. Then turn away from the shower, tilt head slightly back and rinse off. He really needs to know how to wash properly at this stage!

Hopefully once he wants to get into romantic situations he'll realise he needs to be clean else nobody will want to get off with him!
