No lectern for Andy Burnham? He could re use Liz Truss's, it didn't get much use

Each PM gets their own lectern - they probably haven’t finished making it yet.

First impressions are a bit meh. This speech is pretty wooden.

There was a lectern out earlier but it was taken away, so presumably a Burnham choice. Krishnan Gurumurthy commented on it.
I like that he's mentioned an intention to end rough sleeping.

I thought he was supposed to be a superior orator than Starmer? He’s just as wooden and unsure sounding?!

Worse than Starmer I thought.

They each get their own lectern? What is that? Do they take it with them when they get booted out? Do all the ex PMs have a room in their houses where they stand at the podium and relieve the 2 minutes they ran the country? I'm so embarrassed to have this 7th in 10 years malarky, the news of the individualised podium, for me right now, is just capturing how wrong the focus of politics is these days.

It’s the first time I’ve ever heard him, know little about him (like most of the country I imagine) - but on first impression I’m distinctly underwhelmed and left thinking seriously? This is who they booted Starmer out for? I don’t care much for Starmer either but they have massively hyped up this new guy and I’m just not getting why? He better have some amazingly new and different policies or something hidden up his sleeve because otherwise…what was the point??

Struggling to picture him on the World stage. Very little presence.

I love how in his first day in the job he’s getting ripped to shreds! Maybe give him a chance to see what he can actually do before writing him off.

No lectern is the least of our problems - no content is the real issue.

It was on the running commentary this morning, that he's chosen not to have one.

Lots of people have decided they hate him before he’s even started. I felt the same about Johnson and Truss as they were patently unsuitable, and Johnson (maybe) only got in cos Corbyn was unsuitable, but i think we need to give this guy a chance.

He doesn't have to be an orator. Just do the bloody job to the best of your ability. That'll do.

Somehow, we have to stop being so utterly vile to each other.

When people say, "He better have a lectern", "He better have good policies" et cetera do they understand that the proper English is "He had better have a lectern" or "He'd better have a lectern"?

Younger people might not know Andy Burnham much but he's been around for years. He was an MP and I think he was a Minister for Health at one time. There was a time when he was regularly on Question Time, but I can't remember which years. He's been Mayor of Manchester for several years recently.
He understands the Westminster system fine.
I think any Prime Minister has to be a bit stern and tell us that the country's living beyond its means. It depends how it's done. I think Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves tried to do it with their initial taking away of the Winter Fuel Payment but it was too stark a move so they had to backtrack and I think it has been modified now. It's a shame that they or their advisors didn't think it through better. It put them on to a wrong footing very early on. Perhaps Andy Burnham won't make that sort of a mistake. We'll see.
