School holidays/ holidays...!

Would changing the dates of school holidays work,,,
Because would the providers of holidays know about the date changes,,, & just change the prices to match....?

Eh? There was a brief spell when my kids went to a two week autumn half term, we had a couple of years of bargain holidays for the second week, the majority of schools seem to have taken this approach now and no more bargains.

Well, exactly. I’ve always thought this but people still seem to get excited about the prospect of cheaper holidays. Prices are led by demand though, so it’s not going to work.
Plus, I don’t want to go on holiday at the arse end of October.
And there’s another suggestion that floats around that schools stagger the holidays so they’re not all out at the same time. Well, how the hell is that going to work? Who gets the prize of an extra week in May/June (fucking up exams) and who gets lumbered with the end of January? Not to mention those who have children at schools in different boroughs to each other, with potentially different holiday dates.

It's basic supply and demand. Frustrating but that's the market.

Moving the holidays would be a lot more complex than people realise, especially when it comes to exam marking, results days, uni applications etc. and then terms and conditions of school staff, holidays not matching across schools, so much to consider.

Moving the holiday dates won't help. The firms will just adjust their pricing.

Of course prices will be adjusted.

Teacher here. No term time bargains for us, it's really frustrating. People argue it's supply and demand but other products don't adjust their prices when demand increases. McD don't increase their prices at lunch time and lower them mid afternoon.....
Changing the holiday dates will not give you cheaper holidays, just more families trying to get away in a smaller window of time and unable to get on flights or book hotels etc.

I’m sure I’ve read there’s somewhere in England that has two shorter summer breaks to avoid peak holiday pricing…..maybe somewhere in the midlands??
Scottish school holidays start and finish earlier than England and it affects pricing from Scottish airports but you can often save hundreds by flying out of Manchester or Newcastle at the start of July.
