Following a family taking over a hotel (I can’t remember if the series was other businesses or just hotels).
It was a couple, their daughter and partner. The daughter got married at the hotel and I can remember the mother making fondant flowers for the cake.
i have a feeling it was in Wales. The only other thing I can remember is the woman being pissed she had to honour a regular pensioners lunch she felt she wasn’t making money from.
Tried googling and it sends me in circles with various hotel series that don’t seem right.
anyone?

Oh I remember this! But I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called I’m afraid

Lemonorzo · 19/07/2026 20:36

I think they did over the dining room (in yellow) specifically in time for the wedding. The mother was very dislikable.
would love to watch it again.

They didn’t last long. I started working there late 2004 and they had left by then.

Lemonorzo · 19/07/2026 21:33

It always stuck with me, as I think even from early on they didn’t even like it or the people.

I'm going off subject, but does anyone remember a documentary called 'Looking for Tat' - it was a girl who was homeless and her friend was looking for her? It was on TV late at night.

I remember me and my then boyfriend watching the episode where the couple started a fishing lake in Brittany. We lived in a terraced house in a not very nice street in a dinghy northern town. It was the first t.v series I really remember where people packed up their lives and started a fresh.

Well it set some sort of fanciful idea off in my head and we researched all kinds of wacky ideas, but we lacked much money. So fast forward a few years, we now live on a Scottish Island, where at the time houses were a lot cheaper, cheap enough to buy with the profit from our terrace house and the boyfriend is now the husband.

It wasn't quite as spectacular as these people starting complete different lifestyles, it's more ordinary jobs , ordinary house etc, but the views are banging, the otters are a bonus and I've never once regretted it.

I forgot to say , I think you can watch the episodes on 4 on-demand

I remember that one! Loved that family - they really tried to integrate with the local community and worked hard to fit in.

Well done on your move to Scotland - I assume no regrets? 😀

I don’t recall this but I remember another show about a hotel owner, I think he was called Mark, and he was a bit bonkers, kind of like the Alan Partridge of hoteliers. I’d love to see that again.

Loved it. So funny.

Yes, he was hilarious. He didn’t have a clue really but he wouldn’t let anyone else do anything. I’d love to see it again.

The Hotel. We met Mark when he tried to sell us a timeshare. He was not keen at all to chat about the hotel!

Yes, I think he lost the hotel in the end, didn’t he? Must have been hard for him.

Lemonorzo · 19/07/2026 22:23

I’ve sat and watched it. They were quite difficult characters and I don’t think integrated into the community.
i googled and it suggests it became a care home eventually.
forgot they refused to do a catch up at the end, I wonder if that’s when they had decided they were leaving anyway.

Is Mark still in Torquay?

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 19/07/2026 23:26

All the episodes of the Hotel in Torquay are on YouTube - Christian got arrested sometime later for fraud 😂
