Uk holiday or cheap holiday abroad?

We had planned to go to Lake District or similar. It’s from 7/08. Lots of cottage's still available but I’m dithering. Self catering in Tenerife or similar is coming in similar price. It’s DDs and I they are 13/16. We will be driving from south west so airport parking likely less than the diesel to get to LD. thoughts?

Abroad definitely, if the weather is rubbish in the UK you’ll either be stuck inside or spending a fortune on activities and days out.

If the price is going to be similar, everyone is happy to fly and will enjoy a pool/beach type holiday then I’d go abroad. Lake District is lovely and I have had loads of great holidays in the U.K, but I’d get a much more ‘holiday’ feel in Tenerife hanging out without feeling I need to do day trips and drive around everywhere to make the most of it, totally different sights, smells, sounds and foods.

It sounds like budget is a significant factor for you. If that's right, one thing to make sure you understand is what self catering facilities you'll have in the cheap Tenerife accommodation. I've not been to Tenerife but in other places I've sometimes found that the cheaper self catering accommodation only has a small 'kitchenette' with a kettle, sink and 2 ring hob- not a microwave or proper cooker so it's awkward to cook proper meals. Another thing I've come across in cheaper accommodation is air conditioning in the bedroom only, which makes it very uncomfortable trying to cook and eat in hot weather. Obviously if you end up eating out for your main meal every night that adds to the cost. I think it's worth reading reviews etc to find out exactly what you'll have if you are planning to cook for yourself.

Having said that, as long as you're prepared for that and can budget for some meals out you won't have the risk of a rainy week and spending a fortune on indoor activities (or dealing with bored teens stuck in a cottage in the rain).

Lake District. No contest for me. You really sound like you’d rather go abroad, so go for it.

I would go with abroad - I think there's a high chance it'll rain most of the week as the weather has been so hot before. I would check reviews for Tenerife place first.

@TheWaterim veering toward plan a and sticking with the uk. We have been to Spain already this year I can’t complain. I’m so completely overwhelmed with where to stay and how to organise it now. The pp mentioning catering issues abroad has put me off a bit I’m back to searching cottages.com and Sykes trying to secure

Lake District is over hyped and too busy with tourists. I prefer north of Scotland or Ireland for better scenery.

Not keen on Tenerife either but it will probably suit the teens.

Lake District definitely but maybe a quieter town or village away from all the tourists :)

If you go abroad are you planning to hire a car. North of Tenerife or La Gomera (quick ferry from Tenerife) is quieter/more authentic than south of Tenerife though teenagers may prefer lively.

Abroad, and i say this as someone who enjoys the LD. I dont enjoy the hoardes of tourists and traffic though. I remember my teenage holiday to Lanzarote vividly. Weather will be more predictable, chance to learn some more Spanish, different food etc. Altogether more exciting.
