Hysteroscopy this week - any advice?

I'm having a hysteroscopy in a few days to investigate endometrial thickening. They will be doing a biopsy and inserting a Mirena coil at the same time. I have asked for local anaesthetic and will take pain meds an hour before

I'm nervous because I had a Mirena inserted about 15 years ago and it was EXTREMELY painful. I had no pain relief at all then, so I know it will be different this time, but would be grateful for any advice about during and after. Thanks

No but I’m following as I also had a coil insertion that was so agonising I passed out. And very painful smear tests, I think it’s due to a tilted uterus. I’m due a hysteroscopy soon too and I’ve decided to ask for sedation. You should be ok with a local, although I was wary of this because they do have to inject your cervix in order to numb it. In the literature I got through with my appointment letter they said to simply take 2 paracetamol and an ibuprofen an hour before, which seems barbaric.

I had one a couple of weeks ago. It was painful but not as bad as I expected. I got high as a kite on the gas and air, which helped a lot.

I didn’t expect to bleed quite so much afterwards. Make sure you have a stash of pads ready.

Good luck @DancingonmyOwn88 . They did offer me the option of having it done under general anaesthetic but I definitely want to avoid that. I agree it's barbaric to expect women to endure procedures like this with only over the counter pain meds

Thanks @HearMeSnore . Pads at the ready! They offered me gas and air but I've heard it can make some people very nauseous so I would rather avoid it

I had one a few weeks ago: I was dreading it but it wasn’t that bad. Uncomfortable. Afterwards I needed a good rest and was crampy for a few days

I just had one earlier today and am sitting here slightly sore but nothing too bad, and that was with nothing but a couple of paracetamols an hour beforehand. It did reach a point where the pain felt quite intense but then thankfully it was over and done with.

Hopefully the staff will look after you like they did me today, it really made the whole ordeal less traumatic, and on the plus side for me, they don’t think it’s cancer, just a fibroid pushing up on the womb lining making it thickened.

I'm really pleased to see they are finally offering women proper pain relief options for this procedure. I had one twenty years ago and was expected to get through it by holding a nurse's hand - barbaric

My daughter had this operation last year and elected to have a GA. That was best for her as she is extremely anxious. She came round very quickly afterwards with no pain at all and her symptoms of endometriosis are so much better. It has been a life changer for her.

I had one. No pain meds. Followed by an ablation. No pain meds for that either.

it’s doable but wouldn’t want to do it again.

I had a general anaesthetic for mine I'm afraid. I couldn't bare to be awake during it.

not all trusts do it, but when I had mine I told them I had a really low threshold and they gave me penthrox. Never felt a thing. Worth asking.

I had one and it was bloody agony. Three unmedicated home births with no issue. I would absnot do it again without serious pain relief.

I had one a couple of weeks ago (have had one before then as well). I took two ibuprofen two hours before and the worst bit was the injection of the first bit of local and then it went numb and I wasn’t in any pain, it was just uncomfortable. I didn’t need gas and air. Before and throughout they kept saying I could stop at any time. I had biopsies taken and it probably took less than 10 minutes. I did have some watery bleeding afterwards but it was ok. I am a bit odd though, that I try and do some what I call yoga breathing to try and calm myself down and have something to focus on.

I’m having one in two weeks time under a GA.
