When to decomision old school jumpers?

Sorting through the kids school uniform and working out what needs replacing for September. DD has a few school jumpers, that just seem to never die. They were originally DS's, and have now been worn for 5 years between the two children.

On one hand they're fine, no holes or stains and will probably still fit for another year (brother was bigger, so they were baggy when she first got them). But on the other hand, they're not that extra fluffy soft texture that new jumpers in September are and I feel bad that DD never seems to get as much new stuff.

She also has two school cardigans that were brought for her a year ago, and still near perfect, so she'll definitely be keeping those. Should a chuck the jumpers and get a couple more cardigans or keep going until what we have gives out or is outgrown.

Personally I’d wait until outgrown. (Or lost 😂)

I’d probably buy her one or two new ones but still keep the jumpers in rotation for messy days or keep them as spares until outgrown

I would keep them until they’re outgrown.

My DC had secondhand jumpers for 50p (!) which they both used and then I gave the now third hand (at least) jumpers back to the secondhand uniform shop as they had no holes or stains. Much better for the environment. Fluffy is nice but really not worth buying new just for that.

This is impressive. My DS has done one year of school and I think I’m going to have replace all his jumpers for next year as they’re stained, holes, faded… if no holes or stains I’d probably keep them going until grown out

I keep them until they outgrow them. School jumpers are a money sink to tick a box.

In my experience, it is always the brand new jumpers that 'accidentally' go missing in the first week of September, never the old ones.

SuperGinger · 19/07/2026 13:53

I let my kids wear uniform until it is totally worn out and falling apart

So true

My daughter’s primary had gingham style blouses - had to be bought from specific supplier. Second hand uniform sales had tonnes of them - they just never died and kept going for ever.

This is generally my approach, I've just never had anything make it into it's 6th year of use before, so was wondering if there was a limit. Doesn't seem to be the case based on replies so I'll leave them in the uniform draw.

No idea how they have survived so long, one of them even got lost by DS before he transferred to a sen school, sat in a cupboard somewhere at the school for a year, then came home with DD on her first day of reception.

I never saw my DD in her swimming cozzie and it was out of sight out of mind, in year 4 she said, mummy I've had the same cozzie since reception and it is very uncomfortable 😐 oops
