High protein, quick lunches

Arewethereyetarewe · 19/07/2026 09:01

DC has started a new job and is very busy over lunchtime.

I am trying to think of high protein, quick to eat lunches/snacks.

She has a short break to eat in.

Thanks 😊

Do they have a microwave at work?

-Tuna is surprisingly high in protein and those flavoured tins are nice on crackers or on high protein bagel things.
-Chicken drumsticks or thighs
-A thick soup/stew https://www.recipetineats.com/creamy-tuscan-chicken-soup/

Apart from all the normal sandwiches, I have any of these.

For hot weather:
Smoked mackerel and salad
Home made tsatsiki & wholemeal pittas
Waldorf salad with walnuts
Apple & carrot salad with almonds, sultanas and vinaigrette.
Any salad with pork pie or hard boiled eggs

For Cold weather:
Pea & ham soup & wholemeal roll
Celery & Stilton soup with walnut bread
Cornish pasty (wrapped in tin foil and an oven glove, stays hot for hours)
Spanish omelette
Pasta with tuna or chicken or olives.

The salads take 10 minutes or less to assemble. The cold weather stuff I make while I'm doing supper, the night before. Cornish pasties heat in the oven while I shower in the morning, and then wrapped.

Thanks 😊

She works in catering and it is a grab and go meal. If that helps 😊

Sorry no it doesn't help. Does she have access to keep her food cool in a fridge onsite? Is there a microwave or any way to re heat food?

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/07/2026 09:28

Why does it need to be high protein? A sandwich or a wrap is the easy answer.

SummitWrong · 19/07/2026 09:31

I mean, would the obvious not be to ask your "child" what they want? Im assuming theyre at least an older teen if not an adult?

Eggs

Well she has a job so must be an adult. She also works in catering, so you'd think she's knowledgeable about food so what ideas does she have about what she would like for lunch that's practical in her circumstances?

If she's in catering, is there no free/subsidised food on offer at work?

Ibwah · 19/07/2026 09:35

I make sheet pan chicken kebabs out of chicken mince and then portion them up in baking paper and pack them in a freezer bag. I take them out the night before and add them to anything I fancy like pasta, roasted veg etc

Arewethereyetarewe · 19/07/2026 09:35

Thanks for replies

It is their first job! Not full-time. For over the summer holidays.

What is “high protein” for a lunch ?

2 slices whole meals bread 9.5G protein
1 slice pre sliced cheese 6g

as a teen I would have 2 rounds for lunch so that’s over 30g protein. Add another g with fruit

Arewethereyetarewe · 19/07/2026 09:40

Something to keep them full for as long as possible 😊

backformoreofthesame · 19/07/2026 09:41

Two rounds, some fruit and a couple of biscuits or homemade cake if you are feeling angelic

Notsodisney · 19/07/2026 09:42

All jobs around food I had provided food for us. Is she 100% sure she needs to bring her own?

thekitchensinkdouble · 19/07/2026 09:54

Protein keeps you fuller for longer. Bread and cakes and shite doesn’t. Egg or tuna salad OP. Both would be good. Fruit with yoghurt. If she’s likely to get hungry then a protein bar can be filling. They aren’t ideal but I’d rather eat that than a packet of crisps or a cake.

backformoreofthesame · 19/07/2026 10:24

Home made cake is far better than a protein bar !

you might be staying full but at what expense ? What strange chemicals would you be eating ?

carbs are a cheap and really useful part of a younger persons diet. They give you energy

and older people who don’t have problems should also have a balanced diet which does include proper carbs

backformoreofthesame · 19/07/2026 10:24

Tuna salad with no carbs ? How much tuna !

sashh · 19/07/2026 10:35

Eggs are high in protein, could she take a couple of boiled eggs or possible pickled eggs? Add salad to make a meal.

Humus with veg sticks or pita bread.

Dhal - can be eaten cold.

Bean soup in a flask.

A tub of porridge, just add boiling water.

Nuts if they re allowed are good for a snack.

Jellyfruit · 19/07/2026 11:23

Overnight oats made with Greek yoghurt and loaded up with nuts, seeds and fruit.
Tuna/chicken and egg salad.
Egg, tuna or chicken sandwich/ wrap.
Cottage cheese on crackers/ toast (really nice with honey and pumpkin seeds).
Boiled eggs or protein balls to snack.
Burrito bowls.

BreakfastFeast · 19/07/2026 18:11

Peanut butter

cbbo · 19/07/2026 18:44

Make a massive frittata - eggs high in protein, can add whatever extra ingredients you want (ham onions bacon peppers cheese etc) and then just cut a wedge each day. Very easy to cook

hahabahbag · 19/07/2026 18:47

Honestly, a sandwich and fruit is the best option, in catering there is usually subsidised food (or free)

Littlecrake · 19/07/2026 19:11

There may be “staff lunch” or staff discount

I have a 20min break but usually have a fridge and microwave (I’m still not clear if you do) but work occasionally at a site with neither.
I take
mason jar salads with quinoa and chickpeas
Lentils/dahl of various types - in a fridge place I take prawns and spinach to add. Non fridge place I use a flask
Greek youghurt and granola
Protein balls
Banana, frozen berry, whey powder, flax, chia smoothie made with obnoxiously loud portable blender (but needs a fridge for the milk element).

Egg or cheese sandwich or chicken wrap sounds ideal for her.

Arewethereyetarewe · 19/07/2026 22:21

Thanks for your suggestions 😊

Cook this
https://www.recipetineats.com/zucchini-slice/ - it’s easy she can do it herself.

Couple of slices per day is filling
45 sec in microwave to warm
It also freezes well

Dal is also easy to batch cook and very filling

Zucchini Slice

The great Australian Zucchini Slice! High protein and veggie loaded made with eggs, grated zucchini, cheese and bacon. Totally delicious!
