Can any football fans answer a question please? (World Cup)

My question is - why did no one seem particularly bothered about the World Cup 3rd place play-off last night, or the fact England won it (in some style, it seems)?

I haven't watched any of the World Cup and don't watch any other football, so I can't really see this from a fan's perspective. I get that there was huge disappointment about not reaching the Final, but surely 3rd place is a really good result.

3rd out of 48 teams - that's brilliant - people should be celebrating! Well done England, anyway.

We follow both football and athletics in our home.
Yesterday we were at the London Stadium where Josh Kerr broke a 27 year old world record. It was a record previously held by Roger Bannister of course, but in later years by the likes of Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, so there was a real sense of it 'coming home'.
But its interesting to note that winning the trophy in most sports is the be all and end all.
Of course elite athletes want to win, but if they come away with with a personal best, or break a national record they will have a sense of achievent. And getting a silver or bronze medal in the Olympics, world or European championships is recognised as a real achievement.

Yes I agree. It really varies across sports I think. I wasn't able to be at the D League yesterday (we usually go) but I gather the atmosphere was amazing.

Josh Kerr's achievement was superb; but also I bet the British pole vaulter who competed against Duplantis and Karalis and Kendricks and Lavillenie was pretty happy; and I am sure Charlotte Henrich, who came eighth in her race, is over the moon with a PB and a Welsh record.

I think footy is a bit different tho. That's a good point too from a PP about players not wanting to risk injury so close to the season start in a game that really has no meaning for them.

I read yesterday that the England team donate all of their earnings for every game they play to charity. Since 2006 they've donated over £15m. By playing someone will benefit at least.

And at no point have we behaved the way Argentina did tonight after they lost: one of their players attacked a Spanish players throat & then turned on another player. It was really shocking.

I was just reading about that in the news - what awful behaviour! I'm glad England lost their match with dignity. Argentina have really embarrassed themselves on a worldwide stage.

I was watching the match live - it was truly shocking.

I realise that losing was devastating for them, but what were they thinking? Did no one in their support team prepare them for the potential possibility of losing - and how to keep their cool and respond with respect and grace?
