How do you set goals for yourself and actually stick to them

Just wondering how other people do this…

Do you actually set goals for yourself in life? How do you decide what they are? Do you write them down somewhere, use an app, journal, or just keep them in your head?
And how do you actually stick to them instead of just forgetting about them after a while?

I’d really like to be someone with clear goals that I’m working towards, but I don’t feel like I am at the moment. I’d love to hear what works for you or if you’ve found a way of doing it that actually lasts.

I quite like a check list and to break things down. So if for example the goal is to learn a new language, I would break that down into something like 30mins a day of learning and memorising new vocabulary and 30mins per day of using the new words in stock sentences.

then tick off that I’ve do those 2x 30mins a day

what is your goal and how can you break it down into tasks?

I have to split any goals into little pieces otherwise I procrastinate and get discouraged. This includes small things like cleaning the kitchen or ironing, and big things like losing weight.

That way I can 'celebrate' having done the thing I was aiming for, and then start on the next bit.

It helps to have realistic achievable goals - something to stretch you and aim for but not so much that you give up after a week. It could also help to be clear in your mind why you have chosen to have a particular goal. That can help with the motivation and making it stick.

I think it helps to write it down somewhere in a place that you will see it as a reminder. I find that writing it down is more of a commitment than thinking it in my head. I guess it also depends on what type of goals you have, whether they are long term projects that you want to work on or things that are like daily habits. A big project, you can write it down and break it into smaller chunks that you tick off. If it’s more of a daily habit you might want to tick it off each day.
