Can anyone recommend an area to visit in West London?

We will be in Chessington area on Wednesday and will have several hours to kill in the afternoon. We're thinking about taking a trip into West London on public transport, somewhere with a villagey feel with interesting shops and nice places for coffee. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

You can get the bus from Chessington into Richmond. Richmond is very nice, lots of nice shops, coffee places, it's on the river etc.

There's no direct bus in the day which goes to Richmond, but there is one which goes to Kingston (71) which has a gorgeous riverside, marketplace and lovely independent cafes.

Twickenham. Richmond and Kingston are always heaving.

Start at Church Street (pretty boutiques etc), walk along the river towards Richmond. Stop off at Orleans House Gallery and/or Marble Hill House (no need to pay to go in, nice cafes in beautiful gardens).

Hammertons ferry (if running) across the river towards Ham House (National Trust so pricey without membership).

You can walk to Richmond either side of the river (the views from Richmond Hill are breathtaking) or simply walk back to Twickenham to pick up train/bus.
