EHCP - has anyone applied recently?

DD has severe dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, and I think it’s time to apply. Is it still a nightmare?

Yep mine was denied going to mediation in September. My son has significant needs as well!

Oh sorry to hear that. I should have got onto this earlier, but the sschool were so good at shuffling staff round to give her interventions, but now they’re losing a TA so they won’t be able to offer it next year without an EHCP.

Well you got no chance of having an ECHP in time
for September. Request one now and make sure you give plenty of evidence, it will start the clock on 20 weeks soon as you apply.
They are being bastards for rejecting though, they agreed my son had significant SEN & medical needs but aruged he may not need a sen provision even though I had letters from professionals stating he would likely need a sen provision for senior school. 🤷‍♀️

Ive applied for 2 none have been a nightmare? One 18 months ago went through straight away, and one 8 weeks ago and they agreed to assess straight away.

Always worth applying, always going to be a fight and Labour are about to remove any legal rights we had to fight them.

I got my son's at the beginning of the academic year. We did not need to appeal, but we were made to go on a (completely useless) parenting course before we were permitted to apply for it.

It was a nightmare process and I was fully expecting to be rejected as he has no diagnosis (although suspected ADHD) and excellent educational skills, but needs additional support with regulation. The school were incredible though, and we put a huge amount into the application.

Do it without delay. It’s more than 10 years since I did it and it took 18 months then. Labour are intent on cutting the numbers on EHCPs and I think there will be a rush for them in the next couple of years in anticipation of this happening.

It’s not always a fight I applied for my sons and they agreed to assess and issued one straight away, no appeals, nothing.

I applied in November 2024 and first draft is due next month. 🫠

LA both initially refused to assess and then refused to issue, but conceded before tribunal both times.

(DD is AuDHD, has significant sensory modulation challenges, anxiety, history of EBSA and dyslexia).

I think in some cases it depends on the LA. Ours is on the Special Needs Jungle's Hall of Shame for both their assessment and issue refusal rates.

I applied and got one a couple of years ago. Straight through (I was preparing to appeal but didn’t need to). The toughest part was filling out the form and saying what things were like. It was very emotional. I kept having to walk away from it thinking ‘is this really our life?’
