Help me plan a 6 week solo home

Solosummerholiday · 16/07/2026 13:22

I'm a teacher. Live alone. Lots of friends so I'm.not lonely but I'm spending this 6 weeks holiday with no real plans. If you had 6 weeks of your own time, how would you fill it? Not wanting to go abroad but travel around the UK is good. I'm looking for this thread to be full of positive solo experiences that I can nick!

What do you enjoy?

Do you want to do something with a group? In the past I’ve done walking holidays, singing holidays, meditation retreats, yoga retreats.

Or do you want to potter around alone visiting places? If so, big cities, small market towns, coasts, countryside?

Give us some clues about what your interests are and I’m sure you can get good suggestions!

I would like wholesome pursuits . I'm a fan of one or two nights away ar a time, not long things. I'm midlands ish. So far my list includes a solo air con cinema trip with sweets..

Breakfast out once a week with a good book or a newspaper. You can try your 6 nearest cafes and pick a favourite.

sologirling on Instagram is a brilliant one to follow for ideas for this!
main thing is getting up and moving in sunlight every morning

my advice is to pour into your health - learn to use gym equipment and experiment with making really healthy food that you can batch cook and freeze before the start of term.

skin and hair masks.
home or garden DiY projects.

Personally I love a project, so I would fix myself a target and then work towards that through the holiday. It could be something crafty like learning to knit or crochet and aiming to complete a specific project. Or learning to make something - one year my NY resolution was to master choux pastry.

Swim outside, whether in a lake or a pool - you'll be near Matlock Bath and possibly Hathersage pools. Safe/supervised lakes especially for swimming are becoming more of a thing so might be something near you.

Visit Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland (on a plane but not abroad) or the Isle of Man. There's a variety of train passes available that allow you to travel on trains for a fixed price which can work out cheaper than booking advance fares or using open tickets.

I would take myself out for afternoon teas and stay over night in countryside places with nice walks

Lexy2345 · 16/07/2026 15:26

Come to north Wales for a couple of nights, go to the Mountain Zoo, visit Conwy Castle, explore Bodnant Gardens, walk along Llandudno Pier, ride the cable cars, take the open top bus tour.

Walk to a riverside pub for lunch.

I would make sure I had something booked every week. For me it’d be a trip to London for a matinee. I’d have a hobby project that I know I could probably finish in the time. And a DIY something ditto. And because I love to entertain I’d have a couple of posh dinner parties. And I’d pick a town I’ve never been to and go and stay in it for a couple of days.

Junglekat · 16/07/2026 20:27

Definitely book things in otherwise you could end up with the day wasted planning what to do

  1. theatre trip - come into London and watch a matinee or an evening show and spend the night. Could be any city though!
  2. a trip to the beach
  3. a nice selection of museums scheduled in
  4. walks in a nice national park with a coffee cake and book
  5. make some new friends - join a hike, a club, or a weekly exercise class for example
  6. find some markets to visit - whatever takes your fancy - food, arts, general
  7. visit a castle
  8. Get in the best position to watch the solar eclipse!

plus all the other ideas.

  1. there are so many nice places in the uk and whether you drive or take a train you could visit lots
Coralsunset · 16/07/2026 20:47

Theatre matinees are my little indulgence.
